Chicago Bandits News Release
ROSEMONT - The Chicago Bandits (4-2) comeback fell just short in a 6-5 loss to the Dallas Charge (3-2) on Friday night.
The Bandits jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a booming homerun to straightaway center field from first baseman Brittany Cervantes (3-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 RBI). That early advantage held up until the third, when the Charge put a five-run inning together against Bandits pitcher Shelby Turnier (L, 0-1), making her first professional start.
Turnier retired the first batter of the inning, but two hits and a walk loaded the bases for Charge shortstop Renada Davis, who tied the game with a two-RBI double. Turnier fanned the next batter but designated player Lauren Haeger crushed a three-run home run to the party deck to put the Charge ahead. Haeger would later shift to the circle and was able to hold off a late Bandits surge.
"(Turnier) was mixing her speeds really well and her pitches were great," catcher Kellsi Kloss - who made her NPF debut - said. "Of course she's going to go back and look at that third inning to see what was wrong, but other than that she did great."
Turnier retired the Charge in order in four of her seven innings pitched and finished with six runs allowed on seven hits and one walk while striking out four.
The Charge added an insurance run in the sixth on a solo home run from left fielder Kylee Lahners. However, the Bandits would not go quietly.
Kloss (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) belted a two-run home run just inside the left field foul pole to bring the Bandits to within a pair of runs
"My first hit in college was a homerun so I guess it was kind of appropriate that my first hit in the pros was a homerun, too," Kloss said. "It was a good feeling."
The Bandits rally fell one run short in the seventh after left fielder Emily Allard was able to score from second on a failed double play attempt on right fielder Natalie Hernandez's at-bat.
Haeger got the Charge out of the final frame despite allowing two singles.
After dropping their first series of 2016, Kloss said the team needs to focus on one game at a time going forward.
"Whatever is in the past is in the past and [we will] just look forward to the next game," Kloss said. "[This] series is over and now we have to win a series in Pennsylvania."
The Bandits leave the Ballpark at Rosemont for the first time this season for a five-game road trip beginning Saturday against the Pennsylvania Rebellion with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m CST.
