Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y - A goal from Jon Orlando in overtime gave the Baltimore Blast a 5-4 win in overtime against Syracuse. With the loss, the three-game winning streak of the Silver Knights was snapped.

After an electric overtime win in their last contest against the Florida Tropics, the Silver Knights looked to keep their foot on the gas. But what stood in their way was a potential roadblock, as they went head-to-head with the 1st place Baltimore Blast and the OnCenter War Memorial.

The first didn't come until 3:08 was left to go in the first quarter, as Jon Orlando snuck his way around Andrew Coughlin to tap it in to the back of the net. The Blast took a 1-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The second quarter was practically a sequel of the first, as both teams went back in forth on defense, combining for 12 shot attempts. But eventually, the Blast found another opportunity in the form of Daniel Peruzzi, as he rebounded the shot attempt from Jamie Thomas to put Baltimore up by two.

But just under a minute later with 2:42 left in the half, the Silver Knights finally found the back of the net. Bo Jelovac scored in fantastic fashion with a header off a ricocheted pass from Kenardo Forbes. Just like that, the Silver Knights were only down 2-1 heading to the locker room.

After no goals were scored in the third quarter, the fourth quarter was filled with action. Just 1:22 into the final quarter, Marco Nascimento would extend the lead to 2 goals, as he punched it in the bottom left corner during a power play. But only 35 seconds later, Nate Bourdeau scored to keep the Silver Knights deficit at one.

With 10:35 left to go, Syracuse equalized on a power play goal from Kenardo Forbes to tie the game at 3-3. Syracuse then took the lead on an unusual play. With 8:13 to go a ball from Slavisa Ubiparipovic deflected off the foot of Nelson Santana to give the Silver Knights the lead for the first time all night, putting them up 4-3.

However, Baltimore tied the game up with 16 seconds left in the match as Juan Pereira with six attackers on the field. Syracuse had an opportunity after the goal to win the match in regulation, but shots from Forbes and Jake Schindler were blocked and saved to send the match into overtime.

This was far from unfamiliar territory for either team, as both teams were coming off overtime games in their last respective matchups. However, the match would end quickly. Orlando picked up his second solo goal of the match to secure the 5-4 victory for Baltimore.

Syracuse had more offensive chances than Baltimore throughout the match. The Silver Knights outshot the Blast 26-16. However, Baltimore was led by the stellar play of goalkeeper William Vanzela. The Brazilian made 15 saves on the night and frustrated the Syracuse attack throughout the match.

The Silver Knights offensively were led by Jelovac and Forbes. Both players recorded a goal and an assist each. Orlando lead all scorers with two goals, while Baltimore midfielder Tony Donatelli increased his team lead in points with two assists.

Their next matchup is on Friday, January 19th at the Family Arena, taking on the St. Louis Ambush for the first time this season. The Silver Knights will be back home on January 28th, as they look to win the season series against the Florida Tropics.
