Baltimore edges past Kixx 10-9

Baltimore, MD, March 5, 2004 – The Philadelphia KiXX (16-11) were defeated by the defending Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Champion Baltimore Blast (21-8) by a score of 10-9 tonight, in the team's first action after the 2004 MISL All-Star Game. A crowd of 9,315 witnessed veteran forward David Bascome record the game-winning goal at 12:20 of the fourth quarter. Stuart Dobson fell to 1-4 with loss between the posts for Philadelphia, while Scott Hileman (19-7) earned the victory for the Blast.

Baltimore struck early, just 30 seconds in (14:30), as Carlos Farias blasted a shot just beyond the yellow line that teammate Lee Tschantret redirected past Dobson and into the back of the net. 2004 MISL All-Star Game MVP Guiliano Celenza lengthened Philadelphia's deficit to two, 2-0, with a score that found the top corner of the net at 6:46 of the period. Shortly thereafter, Baltimore's Carlos Garcia netted a pass from Denison Cabral to extend the Blast advantage to three, 3-0, at 7:27. Celenza then added his second tally of the night at 8:31 of the first, providing Baltimore with a 4-0 cushion. KiXX midfielder Andy Guastaferro finally ended the team's scoring drought with an unassisted notch at 13:06. The three-point, 4-1, Blast lead held after one full stanza of play.

P.J. Wakefield knocked in Baltimore's fifth goal of the contest on a feed from Tarik Walker at 5:28 of the second quarter. Less than 20 seconds later (5:47), KiXX defender Tony McPeak connected on an assist from Jeremy Aldrich to bring Philadelphia within three, 5-2. McPeak then added his second tally of the evening at 7:21 of the period, marking the first multi-goal game of his career. Just over a minute later, Philadelphia defender Jeremy Aldrich brought the club within one, 5-4, recording a goal from Dobson at 8:38. The 5-4 Baltimore advantage held entering the half.

Cabral and Baltimore wasted little time in the third, connecting on a strike just over the minute mark of the period (1:10) and extend the Blast lead to two, 6-4. Philadelphia wasted even less time, a mere 20 seconds to be exact (1:30), as Guastaferro stripped the ball from Bascome and knocked in a score past Hileman to bring the team back within one, 6-5. Player/Coach Don D'Ambra then found teammate Pat Morris on the far post, who easily deposited the ball between the posts, knotting the game even, 6-6, at 6:19 of the third. Daughtridge, on a three-to-two breakaway, regained the Blast lead, 7-6, at 10:43 of the stanza. The KiXX entered the final period of action trailing by one, 7-6.

KiXX midfielder Ze Roberto registered a tally at 3:24 of the fourth period to knot the game at 7-7; before Morris' second strike of the contest gave Philadelphia's its first lead, 8-7, at 4:16. Defender Drew Kopp registered the assist on the play. Farias retied the game, 8-8, on a dish from Billy Nelson at 6:14, followed by a blast from Bascome at 9:29 of the quarter, providing the Blast a one-point lead, 9-8. Bascome then extended the Baltimore lead to a pair, 10-8, with his second notch at 12:20. With KiXX forward Goran Vasic serving as sixth attacker, Morris added his third tally of the night to pull the club within one, 10-9, with just over 20 seconds remaining. The Blast held on to earn a 10-9 victory.

Notes: KiXX defender Tony McPeak registered a pair of goals tonight, marking the first multi-goal game of his three-year career. Aldrich's two-point performance (goal, assist) ties his personal best for points in a game; the native of Kalamazoo, Michigan also tallied a goal and assist versus the Cleveland Force on November 8. Andy Guastaferro also tied his career-high of two goals in a single outing tonight; he also recorded the feat versus the Kansas City Comets on November 15. Philadelphia falls to 0-10 when trailing entering the final quarter this season.
