May 17, 2004 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release
BALTIMORE, Md. â The Baltimore Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) have set their 30-man roster for the upcoming 2004 League season, it has been announced by Bayhawks General Manager Jay Pivec.
17 of last year's 23 players return to the team for 2004 after guiding the Bayhawks to their third straight National Division championship and their third New Balance MLL Championship berth in three seasons, including attackmen Mark Millon and Tom Marechek.
Midfielders Josh Sims and Jake Bergey will begin the year on the League's Non-Lacrosse Inactive List after suffering injuries during the 2003-2004 National Lacrosse League (indoor) season. Sims played in seven games last season for the Bayhawks, while Bergey saw limited action last year after suffering an injury during the indoor season.
This year's opening week roster includes 13 new players to the team, including attackman Sean Radebaugh, who returns to Baltimore after sitting out last year due to retirement. He was obtained by the Bayhawks in a trade that sent midfielder Ryan Moran to the Philadelphia Barrage. Midfielder Jarred Testa also makes a return to Baltimore after sitting out last season. He played for the Bayhawks during the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
The Bayhawks also welcome midfielder Bobby Benson to the roster after being obtained from the Boston Cannons on May 6 in exchange for Baltimore's fifth round selection in the 2005 Collegiate Draft. Benson played in four games for the Cannons last year and scored two goals.
The Bayhawks will carry four goalkeepers on the roster this year, who will have the task of filling the shoes of former Baltimore netminder Greg Cattrano, who was dealt to Philadelphia on October 13, 2003. Of the four goalkeepers on the roster, only Erik Miller and John Horrigan have MLL playing experience. Each played in one game during last season for Baltimore. Former Johns Hopkins University netminder Rob Scherr was on the Barrage roster during last season, but did not see any game action in 2003. Meanwhile, Bucknell alum Justin Sussman makes the Bayhawks roster for the start of the season and will probably make the opening night start against Rochester on Saturday, becoming the first player other than Cattrano to start a game between the pipes in Bayhawks history.
The Bayhawks open the 2004 season in Seattle, Washington on Saturday night, when the Bayhawks take on the Rochester Rattlers at 11:00 p.m. in Seahawks Stadium. Baltimore opens its home schedule on May 27, hosting the Boston Cannons at Johnny Unitas Stadium ® at Towson University with game time set for 7:00 p.m.
The Baltimore Bayhawks, a charter member of Major League Lacrosse, was founded in 2000 by the following Baltimore businessmen and lacrosse enthusiasts: Dave Pivec, a former Notre Dame and Los Angeles Rams football player, and now President of Pivec Advertising and owner of Courtney's Café in Timonium Maryland; Chris Hutchins, former University of North Carolina lacrosse player and owner of Bacharach Rasin, the oldest lacrosse equipment retailer in the world; Dr. Raymond Schulmeyer, former lacrosse player at Cornell University and owner of Schulmeyer Animal Hospital in Perry Hall Maryland; and Gordon Boone, former lacrosse player at Salisbury State College and now a commercial real estate broker with Ryan Commercial.
