Long Island Lizards Announce 23-Man Roster

May 17, 2004 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
New York Lizards News Release

The Long Island Lizards announced their official 23-man roster today, following the final weekend of training camp. 18 players -- the entire core of the 2003 World Championship team -- are back on the 2004 roster, as the Lizards look to defend their Championship under new Head Coach Vinnie Sombrotto. Key returnees for the Lizards include League MVP Jay Jalbert, Goaltender of the Year Brian Dougherty, and Championship Game MVP Kevin Lowe, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the 2003 Final.

A.J. Haugen, Tim Goettelmann and Chris Massey return on the Lizards offense as well. Haugen is back after a career-best year, with 26 goals and 8 assists, but all eyes are on Goettelmann after he scored a league-record nine goals in one game last season. Massey was an unsung hero in 2003, scoring 21 goals in only ten games.

The Lizards defense is led by Team Captain Pat McCabe, who has started every game in Lizards history. McCabe is joined by Four-Time MLL All-Star John Gagliardi, and the young trio of Brandon Testa, David Kelly and Damien Davis.

Some of the new faces on the Lizards roster include Mike Hammer, a rookie midfielder from Georgetown, as well as Andrew Wasik, a four-time All-American at Pace University. Also cracking the Lizards 23-man roster is veteran defensemen Bob Errante.

The World Champion Lizards kick off the 2004 season on Saturday, when they take on the Boston Cannons at Boston University's Nickerson Field. Long Island Lizards home games are played at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY. Individual game and season tickets are now on sale. For more information, call 1-866-LIZARD-1 or visit longislandlizards.com.

The 23-man roster is attached, and will be available with full player profiles on longislandlizards.com later this week. The Lizards will practice on Friday night (location TBD). Media is encouraged to attend. The Lizards home opener is next Thursday, May 27th, 7:30 PM, at Mitchel Field, against the New Jersey Pride. Please contact me as soon as possible if you need a credential and parking pass.

Head Coach Vinnie Sombrotto, and midfielder A.J. Haugen will be featured tonight on News 12 Long Island. The segment will air every hour starting at approximately 5:52 PM.
