Bakersfield Escapes with a Win Over Reno

BAKERSFIELD - The Bakersfield Jam (2-0) completed the opening weekend sweep of the Reno Bighorns (0-2), winning 118-111 tonight. Brian Butch finished with a consecutive double-double performance scoring 27 points, including 6-9 shooting from downtown, and grabbing 13 rebounds.

The Jam picked up where they left off last evening with Osiris Eldridge hitting back-to-back threes to start the game. Bakersfield led by as many as 14 points in the first period and Damian Johnson hit a buzzer beater three to bring the score to 30-26 at the end of the first. The Jam entered halftime with a 54-51 lead.

Reno outscored Bakersfield 19-10 to start the third quarter and gained a 10 point advantage at the 6:52 mark. The Jam answered back with Adrian Thomas hitting 3 three pointers and finished the third quarter up by 1 point, 82-81.

The teams traded baskets for the majority of the final period. Mustapha Farrakhan converted a fast-break lay-up to bring the lead up to 6 points with 3:16 left in the game. Adam Koch then completed a three-point play and Brian Butch nailed a three pointer to bring the lead up to 8 and Bakersfield sealed the game with clutch free throws from Farrakhan and Eldridge.

Farrakhan scored 19 points and dished out 7 assists tonight. Renaldo Major was within the reach of a triple-double, finishing the game with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, while also blocking team-high 3 shots.

Blake Ahearn led the Bighorns with 30 points and 8 assists. Cedric Bozeman contributed 19 points and 8 assists. Nick Fazekas and Doug Thomas both finished with a double-double, 17 points/10 rebounds and 13 points/14 rebounds respectively.

Bakersfield next travels to Reno and will look to improve to 3-0 on the season against the Bighorns Friday night.
