Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa-A fluke goal by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders set the tone in the third period of Saturday night's contest at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Cedar Rapids forward Alec Marsh was credited with the goal that broke a scoreless tie at the 2:19 mark of the game's final frame, and the RoughRiders would add an additional pair of goals to top the Dubuque Fighting Saints 3-1 in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,098. The loss dropped Dubuque out of contention for the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup and prevented Dubuque from passing the RoughRiders in the Eastern Conference standings.

After the teams sat deadlocked at zero through 40 minutes, the Riders took advantage of Dubuque accidentally knocking the puck into their own goal. Marsh's shot bounced off the skate of Dubuque defenseman Blake Hillman, and as he attempted to retrieve the puck, knocked it into the open net to make it 1-0 Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids would score again seven minutes later on a goal from Frederik Tiffels. With the RoughRiders on the powerplay, Tiffels accepted a pass from Clark Kuster and one-timed a shot through the arm of Dubuque goaltender Kevin Reich to make it 2-0 at 9:56.

Cedar Rapids would add a final strike at the 15:14 mark of the period. The RoughRiders passed the puck to Andrew Oglevie who knocked it to the front of the goal. The puck was bouncing on its edge, and Andrew Poturalski setted it down, and scooped a shot over Reich's shoulder to make it 3-0 Cedar Rapids.

Dubuque would break Cedar Rapids goaltender Danny Tirone's shutout bid at the 19:16 mark of the game. With Reich on the bench for an extra attacker, Dylan Gambrell snapped a shot past the goaltender's blocker to get Dubuque on the board.

Dubuque outshot Cedar Rapids 28-20 on the evening and remained the 2ndPlace in the Eastern Conference with the win. With Dubuque's loss, the Waterloo Black Hawks officially clinched the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup. This is the first time in the three years of the cup that the Fighting Saints will not claim the Eastern Iowa rivalry series trophy.
