Altoona Curve News Release
(BINGHAMTON, NY) -- Craig Brazell smashed two home runs and Joey Cole pitched six solid innings Saturday to lead the Binghamton Mets to a 4-1 win over the Altoona Curve.
A crowd of 2,274 at NYSEG Stadium watched Brazell connect twice off Curve starter Landon Jacobsen (4-3) to provide the Binghamton (19-18) with the margin of victory.
Brazell socked a solo homer in the first and a two-run shot in the fifth for his seventh and eighth round-trippers of the season.
"He's a quality hitter," said Curve manager Dale Sveum. "He did two nice pieces of hitting, really. He hit a change-up that was down...that he stayed with and hit the heck out of. Then he took a fastball out over the plate and hit the heck out of it, too. Those two swings were the difference in the ballgame."
Cole (2-0) and the B-Mets bullpen made Brazell's power display stand up. Cole allowed one run on five hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out six in picking up the win.
Steve Bennett and Tim Lavigne (third save) combined for three scoreless innings of relief to close out Altoona (19-20),which lost for the first time in its last six road games.
Jacobsen didn't have his best stuff in allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings of work. The right-hander walked three and struck out four in suffering his second straight defeat. His ERA rose from 1.34 to 1.75.
"He gave up a lot of fly balls and didn't get many ground balls at all," Sveum said of Jacobsen. "But he battled and threw strikes...and it was nice to see--not having his best stuff--that he still battled and kept us in the game."
Shawn Garrett led the Curve offense by going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. Brett Roneberg knocked in Garrett with a two-bagger in the fourth inning for Altoona's lone run.
The Curve managed six hits--all of them were doubles.
The final game of the set in Binghamton is Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Curve lefty Mike Connolly (2-2, 3.44), pitching just 45 minutes from his hometown of Oneonta, NY, will go against B-Mets' southpaw Phil Seibel (2-4, 4.55).
