Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

If At First...

The Altoona Curve scored three times in the first inning and never trailed thereafter, beating the Binghamton Mets 4-1 at Blair County Ballpark yesterday. Mike Jacobs was 2 for 3 with an RBI double, driving in Binghamton's only run in the sixth. Lastings Milledge also had two hits for the B-Mets, who dropped their second straight to Altoona and have lost 17 of 23 July contests.

‘Pen Not So Mighty

Last night, reliever Luz Portobanco allowed a homer to Altoona's Carlos Maldonado in the eighth, the only run yielded by the ‘pen. In their last seven games, B-Mets relievers have allowed 24 runs, 22 of them earned, spanning 29 2/3 innings (6.67 ERA). The Binghamton ‘pen hasn't turned in a scoreless outing since Anderson Garcia threw two shutout innings July 16th vs. Reading. B-Mets relievers have picked up just one save since June 22nd and haven't earned a win since June 30th at New Britain (Garcia). B-Mets starters own all six of the team's wins in July.

Starting Off Right

Last night, B-Mets starter Ken Chenard got the loss, allowing three runs in five innings. However, Chenard gave the B-Mets their sixth straight start of three earned runs or less, with the rotation posting a 2-1 record and a 2.92 ERA (12 ER, 37 IP) over that stretch. Four of the six Binghamton starters have lasted at least five innings during that span, with two throwing complete games.

Coming From Behind

With their loss yesterday after Altoona's three-run first, the B-Mets have now lost six straight games in which its opponent scored first. Binghamton allowed runs in the first inning in three of those games. The B-Mets last win when not scoring first came July 16th vs. Reading (9-2). Binghamton is 15-32 when they allow their opponent scores first.

On The Mound

RHP Yusmeiro Petit (5-2, 2.83)

Last Time Out: Fri. @ BOW (W): 9 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 7 K (W 4-2)...Yusmeiro threw his first career nine-inning complete game, retiring nine of the first 11 before giving up three straight hits and a run to begin the fourth. Starting with Tripper Johnson's RBI groundout in that inning that scored Bowie's second run, Petit retired the final 18 Baysox in order, winning his third consecutive start and fifth straight decision.

This Season: En route to winning his last three starts, two of them complete games, Yusmeiro's posted a 2.35 ERA, walking three and striking out 25 in 23 innings. The righthander's gone at least seven innings in each of his last four starts. Yusmeiro's allowed three earned runs or fewer in 14 of his 16 starts this year, walking no more than two in any outing. Lefties (.267, 9 HR) have had more success against Yusmeiro than righthanders (.192, 2 HR), but southpaw swingers are just 4 for 32 (.125) with a homer against him in his last two starts.

Against Altoona: Yusmeiro went six innings for the first time this year against the Curve on May 20th at NYSEG Stadium, not allowing a run on two hits and a walk, striking out eight, and earning his first win of the season in a 9-2 B-Mets victory. Yusmeiro allowed a leadoff single to Rajai Davis, whom he picked off first before retiring the next 10 in a row as only one runner reached third base against him on the day.

Background: The Maracaibo, Venezuela native is in his fourth season in the Mets organization after signing as a non-drafted free agent in November 2001. Last season, the righthander was 12-6 with a 2.20 ERA in 26 regular-season starts between Low-A Capital City, High-A St. Lucie and Binghamton, finishing second in the minors with 200 strikeouts.
