Austin Aztex News Release

Austin, Texas - The Austin Aztex (7-10-3) hosted Portland Timbers 2 on Saturday, August 1^st at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in Austin, with a final score of 1-0 in favor of Portland. The Aztex controlled the game early, but a second half Timbers goal would be the difference. T2 gains three points in a match characterized by plentiful but missed chances for Austin, and opportunistic attacking for Portland.

The early stretches of the first half belonged to the Aztex, with sharp passing and aggressive defense earning them a dominant share of possession for the first 25 minutes. Defender Mikey Ambrose found his forwards running deep to create several goal scoring opportunities, including a 21^st minute through ball to Kris Tyrpak, who juked left but had his shot blocked by Portland goalkeeper Jake Gleeson. Just two minutes later, midfielder Tony Rocha nearly put the Aztex ahead with a free kick from just outside of the box, but saw his shot rattle off the crossbar. Portland began threatening in the late stages of the first half. Forwards Kharlton Belmar and Rundell Winchester used their speed to create fast break chances on the counter attack, but three first half saves from Devin Perales kept the game scoreless going into halftime.

Portland came out firing in the second half with aggressive possessions in the Aztex side of the field. They ended up scoring in the 54^th minute, when Midfielder George Fochive got the rebound off a corner kick and fired a fast shot over the head of Devin Perales to put Portland up 1-0. Just a few minutes later, Timbers forward Rundell Winchester looked to be in position to put Portland in a controlling 2-0 lead when he got a deep ball to put him in a one-on-one position with the goalkeeper. Winchester dodged Devin Perales and moved toward an open net, but was caught from behind by Aztex captain Lance Rozeboom, who deflected the ball out of bounds to keep Austin in the game.

Despite controlling possession for the final twenty minutes, the Aztex were unable to find an equalizer. An extra time skirmish that involved a straight red card for Aztex defender Mikey Ambrose and a shoving match with Brendan King and Kharlton Belmar would cap off the game, with a final score of 1-0 Portland.
