
Azevedo Scores Overtime Winner

Kitchener Rangers News Release
Kitchener, ON: 6,705 came out for the opening game of the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup. Justin Azevedo scored the game winning goal at 6:59 in overtime to give the Kitchener Rangers a 6-5 win over the Gatineau Olympiques.
The Rangers Jason Akeson opened up scoring with an unassisted goal at 6:17 in the first period. Nick Spaling picked up the loose puck to score just over a minute later to put the Rangers up by 2. Rangers top line of Matt Halischuk, Justin Azevedo and Nick Spaling netted the third goal of the game at 11:57. Michael Stinziani went five-hole on Josh Unice to bring the Gatineau Olympiques into the game. Gatineau's Paul Byron picked up a rebound at the 16:40 mark in the first to close the period 3-2.
Mikkel Boedker went top shelf, glove side on Ryan Mior on the power play to open up the second period and give the Rangers a two goal lead once more. Matt Halischuk netted his second goal of the game midway through the period.
It was all Gatineau in the third period with a goal a piece from Nicholas Valliere Mayer and Alexandre Quesnel. Quesnel tied the game 5-5 with his goal at 9:05.
The Kitchener Rangers return to action Sunday, May 18th when they face the Spokane Chiefs at 4:30pm.
