Bloomington Extreme News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The top radio broadcast team in the United Indoor Football League last year returns for another tour of duty for the Bloomington Extreme this season.
Play-by-play broadcaster Greg Halbleib and analyst Craig Fata, selected by league peers in the UIF as "Broadcasters of the Year" for their outstanding work in covering the Extreme last season.
"It was quite a surprise and honor; one we weren't expecting," said Halbleib, the sports director for Radio Bloomington, whose station WTRX (93.7 FM) carries all the Extreme games home and away.
"Craig and I are looking forward to another exciting season," added Halbleib, who is in his 27th year as a radio broadcaster and his fourth with Radio Bloomington. He spent 23 years as a sports and news broadcaster in Princeton for WZOE, calling high school and college football, basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.
"We found indoor football to be a lot of fun and even more so than we imagined. It's football at its most intense level because of the compressed field. The skills and requirements that are required of the players are the same just in a closer space. There's less margin for error."
Halbleib, who completed his fourth year as the lead broadcaster for Illinois State University football on the Redbird Radio Network, utilizes the talents of Extreme head coach Ted Schmitz as his analyst on the ISU broadcasts.
Fata, a public education officer and fire inspector for the Town of Normal fire department, has done broadcasts of high school sports for Radio Bloomington the last two years. Prior to that, he was the news director at WSOY in Decatur.
