This Week in the UIF: Training Camps open this Friday, March 9th. While all teams are gearing up for their first official practice, the Rock River Raptors are taking a page from NCAA basketball and holding Midnight Madness. Practice will start at 12:01 a.m. Friday at the Indoor Sports Center in Loves Park, IL. For the fans sake, the event will open at 10:30 Thursday night with beverage specials. Fans will have the chance to check out the 2007 hopefuls as well as meet this season's Mountain Dew Dynomite Dancers.
Raptors President, Tom Crow, is a guest on This Week in the UIF, which is now available on-line. New New New: A new season kicks off March 23rd with three new teams and several new coaches. The Billings Outlaws and RiverCity Rage (St.Charles, MO) join the UIF after competing in another league. Heron O'Neal continues at the helm for the Outlaws but RiverCity promoted from within to make Jim Cox head coach. It's a brand new team in Colorado. They have hired Collins Sanders to lead the Ice in their inaugural season. This will be Sanders' fifth time leading a new team. Other new coaches around the UIF include Ervin Bryson at Ohio Valley, Rod Miller in Omaha and Rich Britt in Sioux City. Speaking of new...Rock River, Bloomington and Ohio Valley have all launched new websites.
UIF In The NEWS: The Omaha World Herald took note of the Beef signing seven players recently. Sioux City's signing of former LSU lineman Terry Phillips was picked up by the Sioux City Journal. The staff of the Billings Gazette noted how the Outlaws and the local YMCA will be serving more youth and families while the Pantagraph wrote about how the Bloomington Extreme tapped local and experienced talent to shore up its coaching staff. In Illinois the Rockford Register Star featured Raptors owner Bob Lowe's involvement in local sports. UIF Commissioner & Executive Director, Dakota Crow was highlighted by the Intelligencer Wheeling News Register.
Congratulations to Evansville's Tommy Manus. He'll start the season with the BlueCats but will be joining the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League later this spring. Former Sioux City Bandit Damien Bauman had a good weekend. In the opening game of the Arena Football League season Bauman started at nose tackle for the KC Brigade and helped his team upset the Chicago Rush--last year's champions. Getting an Early Start: Colorado and RiverCity just can't wait to play. The Ice will play an exhibition game against the semi-pro Denver Titans March 15th at the Budweiser Events Center. The Rage host the Northeast Missouri Wildcats at the Family Arena in St. Charles March 17th.
Regular Season Kicks Off in Two Weeks: Two new UIF teams kick off the regular season Friday night, March 23rd as the Colorado Ice host the Billings Outlaws at 7 p.m. Mountain Time at the Budweiser Events Center. Week one's Saturday, March 24th slate has Ohio Valley hosting Lexington at 7:05 Eastern. In the Central Time Zone it's Omaha at Sioux City, Sioux Falls at Rock River and RiverCity at Evansville--all 7:05 p.m. starts.
