Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES - Future NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice along with "A-Team" dancers Becky and Nancy took part in the Kids Fitness Challenge on Saturday, April 8 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The event was a part of the California Department of Health Services and the Fitness Challenge Foundation landmark National Public Health Week (April 3-9) to rally Californians to build healthier communities, eat healthy and be physically active to reduce childhood obesity.
The "A-Team" dancers along with other celebrity guests helped lead warm-ups for more than 10,000 in attendance. The event marked one of the largest youth-focused, non-competitive 5K events in state history.
"I was very impressed with the amount of children that took part in the run," Becky said.
"The Kids Fitness Challenge was a great success and I'm looking forward to taking part again next year."
Several top state and local officials Jerry Rice, Olympic athletes, Ryan Benson (winner of NBC's The Biggest Loser) and emcee Colleen Williams to encourage and lead participants. This event will kick off Kids Fitness Challenge events in other cities across the country.
Physical inactivity and poor nutrition are one of the major public health challenges facing California and the rest of the nation. California is currently experiencing an obesity epidemic with one-third of 9- to 11-year-old children at risk for or already overweight and more than 73 percent of youth unfit.
