LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Avengers and the United Teachers Los Angeles have awarded the winners of a secondary literacy and writing program in support of the National Education Association sponsored Read Across America.

Elle Dalconzo of Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School was judged to be the best of more than 200 student entries from across the Los Angeles Unified School District. Dalconzo took home the grand prize of The Princeton Review Live SAT Course and a collection of The Princeton Review Admission to College Guides for her school's library by developing an original newsletter with a sports theme with articles, poetry and pictures. She also was honored at the beginning of the Avenger home game against the Georgia Force on May 19.

Mrs. Michelle Touceda of South Gate Middle School was the grand prize teacher and will receive four 2008 Avenger season tickets for having the most student entries. South Gate Middle School was named the grand prize winning school with over 90 students participating and will receive an Avenger player visit for having the most entries.

"As an organization we are always looking to enrich the lives of our youth," Avenger owner and chief executive officer Casey Wasserman said. "The Avengers understand their role in the community and enjoyed viewing the student's creative work."

The Avengers, The Princeton Review, MetLife, Beyond the Bell and the UTLA/NEA joined forces to offer the "Read, Write, Succeed" Sweepstakes, to encourage the joys of reading and the importance of writing among secondary students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The sweepstakes awarded 24 students, eight teachers and one school. The winners are listed below.

LAUSD students in grades six through 12 had two options to enter the contest. Students could write an original free-style, limerick, or haiku poem with a sports theme or design an original newsletter with a sports theme with articles, poetry and pictures. The contest was an opportunity for students to express themselves and to recognized and be rewarded for their creative talents.

The winners were selected from each of the UTLA designated areas from the North, South, East, West, Central, Valley East, Valley West, and Harbor.

Each winner received four lower-level seats to an Avenger game of their choice at STAPLES Center and prizes from The Princeton Review. Eight teachers received a $50 American Express gift certificate and four lower-level seats to an Avenger game of their choice for having the most student entries. One grand prize teacher received four 2008 Avenger season tickets for having the most student entries. One grand prize school received an Avenger player visit for having the most entries.
