THE AVENGERS: As they reach the halfway point in the 14-game Arena Football League regular-season, the Avengers have won two in a row and definitely have the look of a playoff contender. At 4-2, they can equal last year's win total of five with a victory over the Dallas Desperados on June 1, at STAPLES Center. L.A.'s only two losses in 2002 have come at the hands of the AFL's top two teams (the 6-0 San Jose SaberCats and the 5-1 Arizona Rattlers). With five of their last eight games at home, the Avengers could be well on their way toward earning the first playoff berth in franchise history. Back in the lineup after a two-week stay on the injured reserve list (broken right wrist), offensive specialist Chris Jackson has continued on his torrid "M.V.P." pace. In a 74-53 victory over the Georgia Force last Friday (May 24), he set single-game team records for receptions (13) and scoring (38 points). Quarterback Tony Graziani is also at the top of his game, having thrown 31 touchdowns against only two interceptions so far this season. At Georgia, Graziani was 27-of-36 for 352 yards and seven touchdowns. On the other side of the football, the Avengers have been stingy this year at STAPLES Center, allowing only 24.5 points per game. Fullback-linebacker Chad Dukes has been a standout for the Avengers in all phases of the game. Last week, he scored three touchdowns, rushed for 19 yards, caught a 24-yard pass, returned a kickoff 12 yards, made 8.5 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.

THE DESPERADOS: Under the direction of long-time Dallas Cowboys special teams coordinator Joe Avezzano, the Dallas Desperados are 2-4 in their inaugural 2002 season. Veteran AFL quarterback Andy Kelly has thrown 31 touchdowns this year, but has also tossed nine interceptions. Rookie offensive specialist Dialleo Burks leads the Desperados with 42 catches for 544 yards and 12 scores, while WR-DB Adrian Lunsford is averaging 104.8 all-purpose yards per game and 20.2 yards per kickoff return. Dallas has played teams tough defensively, allowing just 257.7 yards per game (No. 4 in the AFL). Defensive specialist Hassan Shamsid-Deen leads the way with 29.5 tackles and two interceptions. The Desperados are operated by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. His son, Jerry Jones, Jr., is the team's president and general manager.

THE HEAD COACHES: One of the brightest offensive minds in the Arena Football League, Ed Hodgkiss is in his first year as a head coach with the Avengers. He served as the offensive coordinator for the Indiana Firebirds during the previous three seasons (1999-2001). Last year, Hodgkiss' offense averaged 58.1 points and 301.6 yards per game. He defeated the New York Dragons, 43-25, in his head coaching debut on April 19, and currently owns a record of 4-2 ... After establishing himself as one of the top assistant coaches in the National Football League, Joe Avezzano is in his first year as a head coach in the AFL. He joined the coaching staff of the Dallas Cowboys in 1991 and has since earned NFL "Special Teams Coach of the Year" three times. Before beginning his NFL coaching career, Avezzano worked at Texas A&M, Oregon State, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Iowa State and Florida State.

THE SERIES: The Avengers won the only previous meeting between the two Western Division teams, 52-51, in Week 3.

THE LAST MEETING:

DALLAS, Tex. (May 4, 2002) -- Several fans of the Dallas Desperados had seen enough as they headed up the aisles of the American Airlines Center. Playing in its first-ever home game, their team had just turned over the football and trailed the Avengers, 45-37, with less than two minutes remaining.

Perhaps newcomers to the Arena Football League, they might have an excuse, but they'll not likely do that again.

Within a wild conclusion that could be considered bizarre yet typical of AFL action, 21 points were scored in the game's final 1:45 as the Avengers outlasted the Desperados, 52-51, before a sellout crowd of 15,196.

Los Angeles seemed to have the game in control when offensive specialist Chris Jackson (despite breaking his right wrist in the second quarter) caught a spectacular 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tony Graziani to put the Avengers up, 52-45, with 13.5 seconds left.

Jackson finished with eight catches for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Graziani was 23-of-34 for 312 yards and five touchdowns.

Dallas, however, fought back with lightning speed, driving to the Avenger two-yard line in two plays. From there, Desperado quarterback Andy Kelly hit offensive specialist Dialleo Burks on a fade pattern to the corner with only two-tenths of a second remaining. But, a bad snap on the point-after kick allowed Avenger FB-LB Chad Dukes to tackle the holder, nullifying the attempt that could have tied the score.

With those two-tenths of a second still on the scoreboard clock, the game had not yet been decided as Dallas kicked off. Los Angeles still had to recover the kickoff, which took a crazy bounce off one of the uprights and remained loose until WR-LB Greg Hopkins recovered the free-ball in the left corner of the end zone for a touchback, preserving the victory.

Hopkins was outstanding for the Avengers in every phase of the game. While on defense in the opening minute of the second quarter, he recovered an errant lateral pass and minutes later was on the receiving end of a five-yard TD toss from Graziani that put L.A. up, 21-13.

Not only did Hopkins finish with a game-high nine catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns, he also intercepted a Kelly pass and returned it for a score, giving the Avengers a 14-6 lead with 9:21 left in the first quarter.

Kelly was 21-of-31 for 256 yards and four TDs.

With the Avengers leading 42-37, Graziani was intercepted by Dallas WR-LB Jake Hoffarth on the second play of the fourth quarter, giving the Desperados a chance take the lead for the first time since the game's opening minutes. But, the Avengers got the football right back when Kelly was intercepted by WR-DB Kevin Ingram with 11:48 remaining.

Los Angeles could not take full advantage, however, and had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Remy Hamilton that put the Avengers up, 45-37, with 7:29 left.

On Dallas' ensuing possession, Kelly threw his third interception of the night, this time to defensive specialist Derek Grier, giving L.A. the football at its own nine-yard line. But, disaster struck on third down as Graziani was sacked for a safety, making the score 45-39.

Then, the Avengers tried an onside kick. But, Dallas recovered and quickly scored on a three-yard pass from Kelly to Burks with a minute remaining. Avenger lineman Tony Plantin blocked the extra point and the game remained tied at 45-45, setting up the contest's climactic final seconds.

LOS ANGELES (2-1) 14 14 14 10 -- 52
DALLAS (1-2) 13 14 10 14 -- 51

· Give the Avengers their sixth victory in their past nine games against Western Division foes (dating back to last season)
· Be the second time in franchise history that the Avengers have won three consecutive games
· Even L.A.'s record this season vs. the Western Division at 2-2
· Move the Avengers three games over .500 for the first time in franchise history
· Give the Avengers a 3-0 record at STAPLES Center this season (and 7-10 all-time)

THIS WEEK'S QUOTES:

Avenger head coach Ed Hodgkiss on last week's victory at Georgia: "We were happy to come out of there with a win. Anytime you can go all the way to the other coast and get a win, it's a good thing. We came out in the second half and didn't match Georgia's intensity. They cranked it up a little bit and we didn't. But, once again, our special teams were able to rescue us."

Hodgkiss on scoring 29 points in the game's final two minutes and recovering three consecutive kickoffs: "That's the uniqueness of Arena Football. With the nets, those kinds of things can happen. Remy (Hamilton) does a good job of kicking the ball around the iron all the time and the rest of the guys work very hard at running down there to make things happen."

Hodgkiss on quarterback Tony Graziani, who is in his first season as a starter in the AFL: "He's exceeded the expectations I had for him, in terms his growth level as the season progressed. The one thing we talked about early on was not turning the ball over and he's done a good job of that (31 touchdowns vs. only two interceptions). We are to the point with Tony that if the other players do what they are supposed to do, we will be hard to stop offensively."

Hodgkiss on this week's opponent, the Dallas Desperados: "We're happy to have them coming here this weekend. We went down there earlier this season and squeaked out a close one against them (52-51 on May 4). They are a team that's getting better each week. It's going to be another tough challenge for us in a critical divisional game as we try and keep pace with the leaders. We've played well at STAPLES Center so far this season. The home field advantage is a very powerful thing and we hope it gives us the edge in these games coming up (L.A. plays five of its final eight games at home)."

PLAYERS TO WATCH THIS WEEK:

Avenger QB Tony Graziani: Tony Graziani had yet another impressive outing last Friday at Georgia, throwing for seven touchdowns and no interceptions, while amassing 352 yards through the air (the second-most in Avenger history). After six games, Graziani is currently No. 1 in the AFL with 1,714 yards passing. While the Avengers had no 300-yard passing games in all of last season, Graziani has already recorded three such performances (352 last week, 329 at Arizona on April 27, and 312 at Dallas on May 4). He is currently 130-of-213 (61.0 percent) with 31 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Desperados QB Andy Kelly: One of the all-time great signalcallers in AFL history, Andy Kelly ranks second in career attempts, completions and touchdowns. He came to Dallas after leading the Nashville Kats to the past two ArenaBowl world championship games. Kelly is currently 140-of-234 for 1,531 yards and 31 touchdowns (with nine interceptions). In Week 3 versus the Avengers, he was 21-of-31 for 256 yards and four touchdowns, but threw three costly interceptions.

Avenger WR-LB Greg Hopkins: Avenger fans are quickly realizing that Greg Hopkins is there when you need him. One of the best all-around players in the AFL, he always does the little things that help a team move toward victory, but when OS Chris Jackson missed two games while on the injured reserve list recently, Hopkins picked up the slack on offense, exploding for 11 receptions for 127 yards and four touchdowns against Tampa Bay on May 17, in addition to making his second interception of the year. On the season, Hopkins is tied for the team lead with 44 catches, and is second on the club with nine touchdowns and 568 yards receiving.

Desperado OS Dialleo Burks: One of the top rookies in the AFL so far this season, Dialleo Burks (pronounced dee-AH-low) has the kind of size (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) and speed that makes him a definite big play threat. He currently leads Dallas in catches (42), receiving yards (544), all-purpose yards (677) and scoring (72 points).

Avenger FB/LB Chad Dukes: Once again exhibiting why he is one of the most feared players in the AFL, Chad Dukes was "Mr. Everything" for the Avengers in their 74-53 victory last week at Georgia. He scored three touchdowns, rushed for 19 yards, caught a 24-yard pass, returned a kickoff 12 yards, made a game-high 8.5 tackles, recovered a fumble and forced a fumble. Dukes is currently No. 2 in the AFL in rushing yards at 101 and is just 96 yards shy of becoming only the third player in league history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in his career.

LAST WEEK'S GAME:

AVENGERS OVERWHELM THE FORCE, 74-53

ATLANTA -- If the Georgia Force and the rest of the Arena Football League thought a broken right wrist was going to slow Chris Jackson down, they were all wrong.

In his first game since spending two weeks on the injured reserve list, the Los Angeles Avengers' star offensive specialist caught six touchdown passes to lead his team past the Force, 74-53, before 5,512 at Philips Arena.

It didn't take long for Jackson to make his presence felt as quarterback Tony Graziani found him for four first-half touchdowns. Graziani went on to have the best night of his AFL career, completing 27-of-36 for 352 yards and seven scores for the Avengers, who improved to 4-2.

Georgia quarterback Donnie Davis also had success through the air, connecting on 25-of-33 for 292 yards and five touchdowns as the Force (1-5) lost its fifth consecutive game.

Jackson, who finished with a team-record 13 receptions for 194 yards, caught a pass for a two-point conversion following his fifth touchdown of the night to tie the game at 53-53 with 1:05 left.

Then, the Avengers successfully recovered an onside kick and wide receiver-linebacker Greg Hopkins caught a 31-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds remaining to give Los Angeles a 60-53 lead.

The Avengers went on to recover their next two kickoffs off the rebound nets and scored two more touchdowns.

When it was all said and done, the Avengers scored 29 points during a 92-second span within the game's final two minutes and had four consecutive possessions.

Georgia finally got the football back with 19 seconds remaining only to have that drive killed off by an interception.

Fullback-linebacker Chad Dukes had an outstanding all-around game for L.A., scoring three touchdowns, rushing for 19 yards, catching a 24-yard pass, returning a kickoff 12 yards, making a game-high 8.5 tackles, forcing a fumble and recovering a fumble.

Los Angeles took a 45-39 lead on the last play of the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown blast by Dukes and a successful two-point conversion pass from Graziani to Hopkins, who finished with eight catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Georgia responded with a pair of touchdown passes by Davis to take a 53-45 lead with 4:08 left and set up the game's climactic final minutes.

Force wide receiver-linebacker Darryl Hammond earned "Ironman" honors after catching nine passes for 117 yards and a touchdown, in addition to three tackles.

LOS ANGELES (4-2) 16 21 8 29 -- 74
GEORGIA (1-5) 20 10 9 14 -- 53

ATTENDANCE: The Avengers have drawn a total of 25,103 fans to STAPLES Center in their first two home games of the 2002 season. That represents a 41 percent increase over the first two games of the 2001 season. The Avengers are currently averaging 12,552 fans at home, placing them at No. 4 in the Arena Football League in attendance. Both of the home games played so far this season -- victories over the New York Dragons and Tampa Bay Storm -- were played on Friday night. The final five Avenger home games will be played on Saturday nights, when the team has historically drawn much better. The Avengers are expecting to break their all-time regular-season attendance record of 13,964 (set on June 10, 2000, against the Arizona Rattlers) at this Saturday's game versus the Dallas Desperados. A crowd of over 14,000 is expected at STAPLES Center, where 7,000 fans will receive a free 2002-03 "A-Team" Calendar Poster.

Game Attn. Increase over 2001
1(New York) 13,142 5,913 (7,229 vs. Houston)45 percent increase
2(Tampa Bay) 11,961 4,468 (7,493 vs. Arizona)37 percent increase
Total 25,103 10,381 (14,722)41 percent increase

HOME SWEET HOME: The Avengers have been inhospitable hosts at STAPLES Center this season while defeating the New York Dragons and Tampa Bay Storm. The L.A. defense is allowing an average of 24.5 points at home so far this season and won both games by two touchdowns or more.

Opposition Points Allowed Margin of Victory
New York Dragons 25 18 points (43-25)
Tampa Bay Storm 24 14 points (38-24)

GETTING DEFENSIVE: The 24 points allowed by the Avengers in their victory over the Tampa Bay Storm on May 17, is a new all-time best for the L.A. defense. It surpasses the effort in the 2002 season opener, which saw the Avengers defeat the New York Dragons, 43-25, on April 19. Prior to that, the franchise record was set on May 26, 2001, in a 36-33 victory over the Oklahoma Wranglers. Currently L.A. is ranked at No. 6 in the AFL in scoring defense, allowing 49.0 points per game. But, in their two losses this season, the Avengers have given up an average of 70.5 points. Last season, the Avenger defense held eight of their opponents under 50 points (which amazingly includes two overtime games). L.A.'s three game winning streak in the middle of the 2001 season -- Oklahoma (36-33), San Jose (47-44) and Houston (48-45) -- represented the first three times in Avenger history that a foe was held to 45 points or less. Los Angeles has held an opponent under 50 points only 12 times in its brief history in the AFL.

THE PRESSURE IS BUILDING: After notching six quarterback sacks in the first six games of the season (No. 5 in the AFL), the Avengers have had 11 sacks in their last seven games, dating back to last season's finale versus the Oklahoma Wranglers on July 22, 2001. Amazingly enough, prior to that game in Oklahoma City, the Avengers had only four sacks for the entire 2001 season and didn't get their first one until the eighth game (June 16, vs. Detroit). Playing in his first game for the Avengers on April 19, offensive-defensive lineman Tony Plantin sacked New York Dragon quarterback Danny Ragsdale twice on his way toward earning "Ironman of the Game" honors. Plantin, who added a key third-down sack for a loss of six yards in the victory over the Tampa Bay Storm on May 17, is currently No. 3 in the AFL with 3.0 sacks this season. L.A.'s six sacks in 2002 have totaled 31 yards in losses. On the flipside, the Avengers have surrendered seven sacks to the opposition (three at San Jose on May 11) for a loss of 33 yards.

OFFENSIVE TURNAROUND: Head coach Ed Hodgkiss has his sights set on making a big improvement with the L.A. offense. Last year, the Avengers ranked near the bottom of the AFL in many categories -- scoring offense (18th - 40.3), total offense (17th - 245.6), pass offense (17th - 228.1), pass rating (19th - 76.4), touchdowns (18th - 77) and kickoff return average (19th -14.9). So far, after six games of the 2002 season, the numbers are up as L.A. is averaging 51.7 points and 304.0 yards per game.

THE MILLENNIUM'S FINEST: Wide receiver-linebacker Greg Hopkins and offensive specialist Chris Jackson are not only L.A.'s top pass catchers, they're also among the most productive in the AFL since the dawning of the new millennium. In fact, Hopkins leads the way with a grand total of 257 receptions since the 2000 season (Jackson is fourth with 197).

IN THE CLUTCH: Tony Graziani has been an exceptionally clutch quarterback this season. In 23 third-down-and-long situations during the first six games of the season, he has completed 11 passes for first downs and four for touchdowns. That gives Graziani success rate of 65.2 percent, which ranks him first in the AFL in that situational statistic. (In the victory last Friday at Georgia, the Avengers didn't face a single third-and-long situation.)

WHERE THE AVENGERS RANK IN THE AFL: Los Angeles is currently home to AFL's top quarterback and receiver, and the second-best runner. Tony Graziani leads the league in passing yards (1,714), while Chris Jackson tops the receiving yards chart (708) and Chad Dukes ranks second in rushing yards (101).

RUSHING UP THE CHARTS: Avenger fullback-linebacker Chad Dukes is in the No. 3 spot on the AFL's all-time rushing chart. He is second among active players, trailing only Andre Bowden of the Carolina Cobras, who is currently in his ninth season in the league. Dukes, who is in just his fourth AFL season, needs only 96 more yards to become the third player in AFL history to break the 1,000-yard barrier. And he's only eight yards shy of becoming the leading rusher in Avengers history, surpassing the mark of 108 yards set by Ed Smith over the course of the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

Dukes has been with the most teams (five).

NFL EUROPE AVENGERS: Six Avengers have spent time on NFL Europe (formerly "World League") rosters – OL/DL John DeWitt (1996, 1998 Scottish Claymores), OL/DL Carlos Fowler (1998 England), QB Tony Graziani (2000 Barcelona), OS Chris Jackson (2000 Berlin), OL/DL Tony Plantin (1999 Amsterdam) and WR/DB Anthony Rice (1998 England).

PICKED FROM THE PAC: Four Avengers hail from Pacific-10 Conference schools -- OL/DL Vince Amey (Arizona State), QB Tony Graziani (Oregon), OS Chris Jackson (Washington State) and WR/DB Mel Miller Jr. (Washington). Three of those Avengers played in the Rose Bowl -- Graziani (1995), Amey (1997) and Jackson (1998). In addition, OL/DL Carlos Fowler played in the 1994 Rose Bowl for Wisconsin (against UCLA).

WESTERN DIVISON SUCCESS: Five of L.A.'s nine victories over the course of the past two seasons have come at the expense of divisional foes. Last year, the Avengers beat each of the other four occupants of the Western Division (Arizona Rattlers, Houston ThunderBears, Oklahoma Wranglers and San Jose SaberCats). The division has a new look in 2002 after deleting Houston and Oklahoma, and adding the Dallas Desperados, who the Avengers defeated on May 4, in a 52-51 thriller.

THE INTERCEPTION KINGS: Avenger defensive specialist Mark Ricks is the AFL's all-time leader in interception returns for touchdowns with a grand total of seven. Another Avenger, wide receiver-linebacker Greg Hopkins is just one behind in second place (along with Hunkie Cooper of the Arizona Rattlers).

All-Time AFL Leaders –Interception Returns for Touchdowns
Mark Ricks (Los Angeles Avengers) Seven
Greg Hopkins (Los Angeles Avengers) Six
Hunkie Cooper (Arizona Rattlers) Six
Gary Compton (Grand Rapids Rampage) Five
Darryl Hammond (Georgia Force) Five
Jai Hill (1995-97, 99-2001) Five
Adrian Lunsford (Dallas Desperados) Five
Kenny McEntyre (Orlando Predators) Five
Lawrence Samuels (Tampa Bay Storm) Five

TWO PLAYERS FROM TWO YEARS AGO: Only two players -- wide receiver-defensive back Anthony Rice and offensive specialist Chris Jackson -- on L.A.'s 2002 roster played for the Avengers in the team's first-ever regular-season game on April 15, 2000, at Grand Rapids.

HALF FROM LAST YEAR: Only 12 of the 24 players currently on the Avengers' active roster played in at least one game for L.A. last season. Among the new additions is a pair of "All-Arena" performers -- wide receiver-linebacker Greg Hopkins and fullback-linebacker Chad Dukes.

AVENGERS ON TELEVISION: The Avengers will have nine of their 14 regular-season games broadcast on television this season. Fox Sports Net 2 will televise eight games, with Bill Macdonald and Artie Gigantino in the booth and John Jackson reporting from the sidelines.
