Avalanche of Hits Overwhelms RedWolves
July 29, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Lexington County, S.C. (July 28, 2015) -- Over the last ten home games, the Lexington County Blowfish had averaged 14 hits per game. They would continue that unbelievable trend, racking off 16 hits in a 13-4 victory over the Florence RedWolves at Lexington County Baseball Stadium on Tuesday night.
The attack began early, and it would not relent. J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) unloaded a two-out triple, plating Jared Williams (University of South Carolina). Further RBI knocks from Tyler Lancaster (Spartanburg Methodist) and Grant Petrey (USC-Lancaster) would extend a 3-0 lead over the visitors.
The Blowfish have scored multiple runs in the first inning in three straight games against their cross-state rivals.
A night where team owner Bill Shanahan announced that the Dixie Youth World Series' opening ceremonies would be held at Lexington County Baseball Stadium would not be affected by rain. Especially not the fiery bats. Anthony Paulsen (Winthrop) and Lancaster both crushed two-run home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Crowe added a single that would, once again, bring Williams home.
Crowe's three-hit game put him at an overall tie for a personal season-high in hits (64). His 42 RBIs now lead the league.
A late two-run crank shot from Reed Rohlman (Clemson), his second of the season, would cap off the scoring, where the ludicrous number of hits continued to pile up. The 16 hits on the night rank third on the season for a single game.
Trevor Hutto (USC-Aiken) allowed only a solo home run to the dangerous Ben Holland, and nothing else. He, along with cohorts Michael Gilroy (Winthrop) and Brandon White (Lander University), slammed the door shut on the RedWolves all night long. Only five hits slipped through the defense.
Final fireworks shows on Friday and Saturday
Gilroy evaded a bases-loaded, nobody out situation during the fifth inning, allowing two runs to score on groundouts. Chris Adams would foul out to end the inning, with the Blowfish still in front by four.
White continued to dominate in a relief role for the Blowfish, not only notching his second save of the season, but striking out six Florence hitters over three immaculate innings. He now owns a 27 strikeouts-to-5 walks disparity.
White's strikeout of Holland ended the game. The single by Adams proved to be the fifth and final hit the RedWolves would muster all night.
Petrey quietly had himself a solid second game in a Blowfish uniform. He anchored the bottom part of the order, hitting 2-for-5, scoring twice, and knocking home Derek Olenchuk (Newberry).
The Blowfish have won nine of the 14 games against the Florence RedWolves in the 2015 season. Over the last three games, the Blowfish have outscored them 32-12. In total, the Blowfish have won five of the last six games total, and six of the last eight.
