Austin Spurs News Release
AUSTIN, TX (November 29) The Toros will host their second annual Schoolhouse Jam game presented by HEB on Friday when they face the Sioux Falls Skyforce. In order to accommodate their special guests, students from Bastrop ISD, the Toros will play their only day-time game this season at 11 a.m. at the Austin Convention Center. More than 1300 students from grades K-6 are expected to attend. The Schoolhouse Jam is a game dedicated entirely to students with everything from the music to promotional games geared toward young Toros fans.
The Toros improved to 1-1 with their win over the Bakersfield Jam last Saturday and look to continue this weekend against the Skyforce. This Friday's game is one of two scheduled during the regular season against the Skyforce, who will visit Austin with a 0-1 record.
On Saturday, the Toros take on the Colorado 14ers at 7 p.m. Free Toros youth jerseys courtesy of AT&T will be handed out to the first 400 kids age 14 and under to arrive at the game. The jerseys feature the Toros new logo in silver and black signifying their exclusive affiliation with the San Antonio Spurs. The new look was adopted by the team after being purchased by the reigning NBA champions last June.
The 14ers boast the first GATORADE Call-Up of the 2007-08 NBA Development League season with Eddie Gill signing to the New Jersey Nets. Gill was selected first overall by the 14ers in this year's D-League Draft.
The NBA Development League is the NBA's official minor league, and the first-ever basketball league with direct affiliations to NBA teams. Now in its seventh season the D-League's goals are to provide affordable, NBA-caliber entertainment to the fans of its 14 teams, as well as continue to develop players, coaches, referees and front-office personnel for the NBA.
As the single source for in-season player "call-ups" to the NBA, fans of the D-League enjoy the highest caliber of basketball played outside the NBA. In fact, former D-League players represented 10 percent of NBA players on 2007-08 opening day rosters, numbering 44 in total. In addition, the D-League has produced 25 percent of current NBA referees and 16 current NBA coaches, including head coach Sam Vincent with the Charlotte Bobcats.
The D-League is an innovative and rapidly growing sports property that also serves as an experimental testing ground for new initiatives of the NBA and its teams, provides continuing education and professional development resources for its players, and is committed to serving its local communities through D-LEAGUE CARES and grassroots efforts.
