Austin Powers Past Sioux Falls

January 6, 2010 - NBA G League (G League) News Release

BOISE, ID Jan. 6, 2010 - At first glance, Alonzo Gee is the spitting image of Robert Horry. They even went to the same college (Alabama) and have ties to the San Antonio Spurs (Horry helped the Spurs win championships in 2005 and 2007, while Gee plays for the Austin Toros, which are owned by the Spurs).

That's about where the similarities end. In his prime, Horry was a long and agile defender, who could shoot with range. To a man, coaches raved about his intelligence. At 6-6, Gee is a lot more compact and explosive, with his game best described as a work in progress.

That's precisely what the NBA D-League is for, and Gee has shown great strides since going undrafted last June. He's worked on a hitch in his jumpshot. And his overall feel for the game has improved. This was evident Wednesday as Gee scored 34 points as the Toros defeated the Sioux Falls Skyforce, 127-94 in the 11th game of the 2010 NBA D-League Showcase.

"I thought we played much better as a team today," said Gee, who shot 13-for-26 from the field, and added nine rebounds. "Coach was telling me to be aggressive, and my teammates did a good job getting the ball in good situations."

Sioux Falls' Reggie Williams was brilliant in defeat, scoring a Showcase-high 43 points on 15-for-19 shooting to go with 10 rebounds. In two games this week, Williams averaged 29.0 points on 75 percent shooting from the field (21-for-28).

Eddie Basden added 20 points, while Dwayne Jones tallied 12 points and 20 rebounds for the Toros (8-6). Keith Brumbaugh had 17 points for the Skyforce (8-8).

Austin will hang around Boise to play the Idaho Stampede Friday. Sioux Falls visits Dakota Friday.
