Austin Aztex Defeat Laredo 2-0, Advance to Face San Antonio Scorpions

AUSTIN, Texas (Wednesday, May 20, 2015) - The Austin Aztex defeated the Laredo Heat 2-0 in the Second Round of the U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night at House Park. With the victory, the Aztex advance to face the San Antonio Scorpions in the Third Round on Wednesday, May 27th at Toyota Field in San Antonio.
An early goal from Andres Cuero in the 28th minute gave the Aztex an early advantage and would secure the victory with an insurance goal by Brian Fekete in the 73rd minute.
The first half belonged to the Aztex, who lead 1-0 after going into the break. Midfielder Mozzi Gyorio threatened throughout the half, creating opportunities in the box off of free kicks and corners. However, it was Max Gunderson who helped create the game's first goal. Gunderson sent in a curling cross to Brian Fekete, who headed a quick touch over his defenders to get the ball to an open Andres Cuero in front of the net. Cuero brought in the ball off his chest and fired away with a left-footed lob for the first goal.
The Aztex would continue to dictate the tempo of the game, possessing the ball and limiting Laredo with clean chances on goal.
The second half remained closely contested with one goal separating the squads until the Aztex broadened the gap in the 73rd minute. Trevin Caesar received a long through ball from Ryan Roushandel and led the attack up the left side, pulling Laredo goalkeeper Jorge Ortega off his line and then crossing to Brian Fekete for an easy score on the open net.
The Aztex will continue USL play when they face off against Tulsa Roughnecks FC at House Park on Saturday, May 23rd at 8:00 P.M. Tickets can be purchased online at www.austinaztex.com.
The U.S. Open Cup will resume on Wednesday, May 27th in San Antonio, with a sudden-death, single elimination match against the San Antonio Scorpions.
