Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Ontario Hockey League has announced that Owen Sound Attack defenceman Andrej Sekera has been awarded the 2006 Max Kaminsky Trophy as the League's Most Outstanding Defenceman.
He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 3rd round of the 2004 NHL Draft before being selected 2nd overall in the 2004 CHL Import Draft by the Owen Sound Attack.
Andrej Sekera has thrilled Owen Sound Attack fans for the last two seasons with his speed and puck handling. He was 7th in team scoring during the 2004-2005 regular season with 28 points in 51 games played while representing Slovakia at the World Junior Hockey Championship that year. But this past season was his breakout year in North America as he was 5th in team scoring as well as one of the top scoring defenceman in the OHL with 55 points in 51 games while leading the team in Plus Minus with Plus 15. Once again he spent the Christmas holidays representing Slovakia at the World Junior Hockey Championship. Plus he was 4th in team scoring during the playoff run with 13 points in 11 games.
The award is named in recognition of Kaminsky, who enjoyed a 10 year professional playing career that included four years in the NHL with Ottawa, Boston, and Montreal. After he retired from playing, Kaminsky enjoyed a 15 year coaching career that was capped by winning the Memorial Cup with the St. Catherine's Teepees in 1960.
Last year's winner was Danny Syvret of the London Knights. Previous winners have included Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis, and Chris Pronger.
This is the first time in Owen Sound franchise history that two players have won league awards. Earlier this year Mike Angelidis was named the OHL Humanitarian of the Year.
