Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

At least the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors brought home a point this time from Owen Sound.

Riley Brace had two goals and two assists as the Majors fought back to earn a 5-5 tie with the Owen Sound Attack on Thursday night, Mississauga's first trip to the site of last year's Ontario Hockey League final, in pre-season play.

The Majors trailed 3-1 and 4-2 at points in the game but scored three straight goals to take a 5-4 lead before the Attack tied the game on a power play early in the third period, which turned out to be the final goal of the night.

Mississauga's record is 1-2-2 in exhibition play, with the Majors playing their final game of the pre-season Saturday at 2 p.m. against the Attack at Vic Johnson Arena. The 2011-12 regular season starts for the Majors Friday, September 23 in Sudbury with the home opener at the Hershey Centre Friday, September 30 at 7:35 p.m., also against the Attack.

The fact that the Majors battled back to get a tie pleased General Manager/Coach James Boyd.

"It was a gritty performance by the team, it was nice to see us come back the way we did," Boyd said. "We were pretty short staffed as well so to be able to hang on and play the way we did was a good sign."

Majors were already playing with a reduced lineup and lost Jamie Wise when he left the game after being punched by Owen Sound's Brett Appio. Appio received a seven-minute penalty on the play.

David Corrente opened the scoring for the Majors with a shorthanded goal at 8:17 of the opening period on a pass from Jordan Mayer, but the Attack scored three straight goals in six minutes to take the lead before the period ended.

Zack Nastasiuk, Cameron Brace and Appio scored for the Attack on Taylor Edwards, who played the whole game in goal for the Majors. Mayer got one back for Mississauga before Gemel Smith restored Owen Sound's two goal lead.

The Majors then got the next three, with goals by Brace and Sergei Kuptsov on the power play tying the game before the second period ended. Brace's power play goal at 2:05 of the third period put the Majors in front 5-4, but a power play goal by Jake Dotchin at 5:07 of the third period completed the scoring.

Mayer had three assists to go along with his goal but he also missed on a penalty shot attempt early in the third period. Kuptsov also had two assists for the Majors.

Tickets for all Majors individual games are now on sale at the Hershey Centre box office and at www.ticketmaster.com. Season's tickets are also on sale by calling 905-502-7788.

Seats for the pre-season game on Saturday are available at the door at Vic Johnson Arena.
