Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack held its annual Awards BBQ on Saturday, June 4 and recently graduated forward Bryson Cianfrone walked away as the big winner.
Prior to handing out the awards, the Attack along with the Owen Sound Attack Pak introduced the players and presented the 2016 Draft Picks with Attack Jersey's.
Prior to presenting 2016 1st Round Pick Aidan Dudas (doo-dass) with his jersey, Dale DeGray announced that the club had signed Dudas to a standard player agreement, cementing his spot with the club next season.
"We were extremely happy to have Aidan sign and for his family to join the organization.", stated Dale DeGray. "It was great seeing the smile on Aidan's face and the enjoyment from the family here today."
Upon receiving the Ray McKelvie award as the organizations 1st Round selection, Dudas remarked how excited he was to officially join the organization and get started in September. Selected 10th overall in April, Dudas tallied 25 goals and 26 assists in 31 games for the North Central Predators Minor Midget squad.
Cianfrone, who was acquired by the Attack in a trade with the Mississauga Steelheads on the day of Owen Sound's 2015-16 season opener, went home with the Pat McReavy Unsung Hero Award, the Tommy Burlington Leading Scorer Award, and the Society of Energy Professionals Players' Choice Award, as voted on by his teammates.
In just the one year with the Attack, Cianfrone emerged as the team's offensive catalyst, scoring 17 times and adding 33 assists to lead the squad with 50 points in 58 games to claim the Tommy Burlington Award.
Cianfrone also provided a tireless work ethic day in and day out that made him both a fan and team favourite, which played into his choice as the Pat McReavy Award winner as well as the prestigious Society of Energy Professionals Players' Choice Award winner.
The 21 year old Stoney Creek native wasn't the only player to take home multiple trophies on the day though.
Both Petrus Palmu and Santino Centorame captured a pair of awards, with the duo tying for the Becker Shoes Player of the Week Award thanks to both players being named the Becker Shoes Player of the Week three times throughout the season.
Palmu would also be named the Butch Keeling Memorial Award winner as the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 Playoffs for the Attack. In Owen Sound's six game loss to the London Knights, Palmu scored three times and added three assists while also emerging as one of the team's premier penalty killers. The sophomore import also impressed in the regular season, tallying 49 points in 52 games of action to improve on his rookie campaign of 42 points.
It would be Centorame who would earn the team's Jerry Reid Memorial Award as the Regular season MVP, however.
In his first year as the captain, the 4th year rear guard posted a career high 41 points thanks to his 14 goals and 27 assists. Centorame continued his strong play into the post season, scoring once and contributing five assists against his former team.
Another offensive stalwart for the Attack was first year centreman Nick Suzuki, who picked up the Harry Lumley Memorial Award as the team's Rookie of the Year.
Suiting up in 63 games for Owen Sound in his first OHL campaign, Suzuki scored 20 times and added 18 assists while also winning the World Under 17 Championship with Team Canada White.
Suzuki's stellar year saw him finish the 2015-16 season as the only 16 year old in the OHL to score 20 or more goals, and his knack for finding the back of the net helped him move in 3rd place on Owen Sound's all time scoring list for an underage player behind only Bobby Ryan and Daniel Sisca.
Six other players also picked up awards on the day, with a number of veteran players honoured for their leadership in the team and in the community.
Fourth year forward Jacob Busch earned the Red Leckie Memorial Award for the largest contribution to the organization, while Justin Brack grabbed the Dave McComb Memorial Award for leadership and perseverance.
Goaltender Daniel Dekoning also picked up an award that honours his commitment to the squad, picking up the revered Dan Snyder Memorial Award as the player that maintains a positive outlook at all times in the dressing room.
Jacob Friend, a 2nd year defender, earned the squad's Harry Kazarian Memorial Award as the team's most improved player while rookie defenceman Sean Durzi was named the winner of the Howard Hindman Award as Owen Sound's scholastic player of the year.
