SURF ROSTER TAKES SHAPE FOR UPCOMING SEASON

The Surf have added four new players to their 2008 roster:

- Lefthanded pitcher Adam Cox, the independent United League's Pitcher of the Year in 2007, was added to the club's roster. Last season, Cox led the UL with 12 wins and 117 strikeouts. He was signed by the Boston Red Sox' organization in August and spent time with Lancaster, their Class-A affiliate in the California League.

-The Surf also signed infielder and South Jersey native Steve Wyland (left). Originally from Stratford, N.J., Wyland led the Division I America East Conference with a .388 average for the University at Albany in 2007.

- Another New Jersey native, righthanded pitcher Chris Perez joins the Surf. In 2007, his first professional season, Perez went 4-2 in 26 appearances for Eugene of the Northwest League, the San Diego Padres' short season-A club. He played collegiately at Division I New York Tech University.

- The team added infielder Brad Thoma. He spent the 2007 season playing for new Surf manager Cecil Fielder with Charlotte County of the South Coast League. Thoma played college baseball at Thomas More College in Kentucky, where he holds school records in games played, runs and hits.

- The club also announced the retirement of outfielder Chaz Lytle. Lytle had been under contract by the Surf for the 2008 season after appearing in two games for the club in 2007.
