Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB -- Anthony Ast saw the writing on the wall. And a ladder to take him over it.
The 20-year-old from Richmond, B.C. knew it would be a longshot to stick with the Medicine Hat Tigers for a third season after injuries limited his impact. On Wednesday he was on a flight to Germany where he'll turn pro.
Talking from the airport in Vancouver, Ast still sees plenty of future in a game that hasn't been kind to his body since being picked 19th ovrerall in the 2010 WHL draft by his hometown Giants.
"It's a huge opportunity for me," he said, declining to name what team he signed with last month until there's been a press conference. "I've had some crappy luck with injuries, for me it's a fresh start. I'll go over there and establish myself and get back my confidence."
Germany was an obvious destination for Ast, whose mother was born there. He has dual citizenship as a result and can play as a non-import player.
He flew Wednesday with his oma (grandmother), who will spend a few weeks in her homeland while he gets started on a new adventure.
"Basically when we land she'll go her way and I'll go mine," he said. "I'm one of the only German citizens who is a free agent; guys my age have been signed with teams since they were 16 or 17."
