February 4, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Larry R, San Antonio, TX and others (edited): "Will the ABA be expanding next season? When will you be announcing new ABA teams?"
Answer: Thanks for the question Larry and others. The questions are very timely. We plan to begin announcing expansion teams this week. There will be an ABA League Owners meeting in Miami in conjunction with the ABA All Star game on Saturday, Feb 11 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. Most of the new owners for next season will be there including many team owners of teams that have not yet been announced. So, we thought the time is right for some announcements. And our expansion next season is even better than last season. The ABA could almost double in size next season and it is already the largest professional basketball league in the US. We have lost a few teams this season for a variety of reasons, some of which could be attributed to the problems caused by the two hurricanes, others by failure of the teams to meet league operating standards. What has been "left standing" is a remarkable group of owners, true entepreneurs with a passion for basketball - and truly the most diversified group of professional sports team owners in the history of American sports. Two thirds of the ABA teams are owned by African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and women. And the "class of 2006-2007" follows that trend. Diversification is one of the key elements that separates the ABA from all other sports leagues, a great point of pride for us. So, get set - and look for some announcements - because there is an ABA team, exciting professional basketball and entertainment at affordable prices, coming to your area next season. If you have a question, please email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
