Roanoke Dazzle News Release
ROANOKE, Va., Feb. 11âDesmond Penigar scored 30 points, leading the Asheville Altitude to a 127-121 overtime win over the Roanoke Dazzle Wednesday night at the Roanoke Civic Center. The two teams combined for a NBDL record for most points scored in a game.
Penigar scored 18 of his 30 in the first quarter, and connected on 12 of 18 field goal attempts for the game. He also collected nine rebounds, four assists, and three blocked shots.
"I didn't think that we were very good offensively in the first half. Penigar carried us," Asheville coach Joey Meyer said. "I told our guys at the half that we can't have just one guy carry us and Desmond was very unselfish in the second half. He gave the ball up and other people were able to get some baskets."
The fourth quarter was a close battle with five ties and four lead changes. Mike King driving lay up with 8.6 seconds left tied the game at 115. King was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw sending the game into overtime.
Rusty LaRue scored five unanswered points in the final minute of overtime to seal the win for the Altitude. LaRue finished with 19 points, as did Greg Stevenson. Kris Lang had 17, Kareem Reid 15, and Lavor Postell 12 to round out double figure scorers for Asheville.
Matt Carroll led the Dazzle with 28 points off the bench. Marque Perry had a double-double with 22 points and 12 assists. George tallied his third straight double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Curtis Staples round out double scores with 21 and 10, respectively.
"I was proud of how our guys came out and competed. We had a short bench and weren't certain going into the game just who would be able to play and who wouldn't," Roanoke coach Kent Davison said. "As a coach all you want is a chance to win down the stretch and we had that. Unfortunately, they made the shots in overtime and we didn't."
Asheville won for the sixth time in seven games and improved to 12-12 on the season. Roanoke dropped to 14-12.
