January 10, 2016 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) - Orangeville A's News Release

Despite the frosty weather outside, things heated up quickly at the Athlete Institute. The Orangeville A's played host to the London Lightning on Sunday, with both teams hoping to gain some ground in the Central Division race. Orangeville entered the game with a (2-2) record, hoping to edge out the Lightning who entered with a (3-2) record themselves.

The Orangeville A's got off to a hot start, taking a 2 point lead after the first 6 minutes. With help from Flen Whitfield and Justin Moss on offense, the A's finished a closely contested 1st quarter with a 2 point lead, 30-28. Whitfield scored 11 points in the 1st quarter, and finished the game with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

The first half was a battle that saw 11 lead changes Orangeville was able to separate themselves comfortably with a 9 point lead at the 10 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. Whitfield and Moss continued to tear through the London defense, tallying 32 points and 13 rebounds as a pair through the 1st half.

Orangeville finished the 2nd quarter with a total of 58-49 on 44% shooting, yet still struggled from the 3 point line, only managing to hit 3 of 12.

The 3rd quarter began with a bit of foul trouble for the A's, with London drawing as close as 5 points at the 10:00 minute mark of the 3rd quarter. After tightening up on defense and getting some easy points at the line, Orangeville took a 13 point lead with 7:46 to play in the 3rd quarter. The A's didn't give up any ground through the rest of the 3rd quarter and entered the 4th quarter with a lead of 11 points, 88-77.

London wasn't going to go down without a fight. In the 4th quarter the Lightning started to mount their comeback. They closed the lead to 1 point with 4:33 to play, after several lead changes. London then pulled ahead to a 6 point lead with 2:17 to play in the 4th quarter, thanks to the offensive efforts of Patterson and Maxwell. With 4.2 seconds to play in the game, Patterson sank consecutive free throws and sealed the game at 111-106 for the Lightning. The A's move to 2-3 on the season. They have a chance at redemption when they host the London Lightning Saturday, January 16th at 7:00 pm.
