Lightning Dominate at Home in 117-87 Game 1 Win over A's

LONDON, ON - Orangeville's offense started out slow with the first few shot attempts and their defense wasn't putting forth a much better effort. Before 3 minutes had passed in the first quarter London had taken a 12-4 lead and their 3-point shooting was heating up. Orangeville managed to finally find some consistency on the offensive end but still lacked a consistent scoring threat. As they looked for a player for which to hinge their offense, their team effort netted them a few baskets in order to keep up with the Lightning but they were only able to hang around for a short time. London began to pull away and closed out the 1st quarter by steamrolling their way to a 30-15 lead.

After a tough end to the 1st quarter the A's were glad to have a break in the action so they could regroup and pinpoint the areas in which they needed to improve. What started as a 15-point deficit for Orangeville quickly became 39 points well before the midway point of the quarter. Not only was London's Royce White (17 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists) his typical dominant self, but Ryan Anderson (18 points, 4-5 3PT FG) and Garrett Williams (13 points, 7-8 FT) added to the offensive barrage. They scored relentlessly and without much resistance as they finished the first half scoring 48% of their shot attempts and with 21 assists on 22 made shots. Meanwhile, Orangeville's production was the polar opposite and their 29% FG (0-12 3FG) had left them looking for answers. Not a single player ended the half in double-digit scoring and they gave up 14 turnovers compared to London's 7.

All of their first half struggles were reflected on the scoreboard to the tune of a 28-68 deficit and they had significant ground to make up if they wanted to make themselves competitive in the contest. The offense finally looked to get organized and they stopped settling for jump shots as they had been throughout the game. Rick Bodiford led the team in scoring with his 13 points (5-14 FG) and Orangeville scored their highest total of the game until that point with 24 in the quarter. Despite Bodiford's efforts and a marginally improved defense, the A's still struggled to limit their fouls and control the glass, which in turn allowed London to outscore them by 4 in the frame and the A's went into the last quarter behind 52-96.

With such a large deficit ahead of them and the 4th quarter practically being a formality, Orangeville still played with heart and competed until the very end to grab a little momentum heading into their next matchup. The A's looked comfortable and seemed to find success with some personnel adjustments that they may consider for Game 2. They began to move the ball around the floor and had significantly more success in their transition game. Bodiford ended the game as the team's leading scorer with 18 points and Slim Magee's 14 points wasn't too far behind. Nevertheless, the gap between both squads was too immense and the triple-double performance by Royce White (25 points, 11 assists, 11 rebounds) helped the Lightning cement their advantage. In the end the A's lost 87-117 and will regroup for Game 2 Saturday, May 6th in London.
