Armor Surge Past Iowa

SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Springfield Armor extended their franchise-best win streak to seven games tonight with a dominant 122-90 victory over the Iowa Energy before 3,110 fans tonight inside the MassMutual Center. The Armor improve to 20-13, just 1/2 game behind the 19-11 Energy for first place in the D-League's Eastern Conference.

The Armor controlled the game from start to finish, leading by as many as 37 points en route to their most lopsided victory of the season. Springfield never trailed tonight, using a 9-2 run to start the game to put the Energy on their heels. The Armor led 32-22 after one quarter and cruised into the half with a 63-44 advantage. Jerry Smith led all scorers in the first half with 19 of his 21 points and the Armor shot 21-38 (.553) from the field and 18-20 (.90) from the foul line.

The third quarter produced more of the same, as Dennis Horner buried 5-6 shots in the period for 13 of his season-high 25 points. The Armor ended the quarter with a JamesOn Curry steal and dish to Preston Knowles for a buzzer-beating three to take a 98-67 lead.

In the fourth, the Armor's Damian Johnson was the last of the eight players to take the floor tonight for Springfield to score in double figures, pouring in 11 of his 13 points in the quarter.

The 122 points scored by the Armor tonight marked a season-high. The Armor also had their best game at the foul line this season (25-27, .926) and knocked down 45-83 (.542) shots from the field, their second best field goal percentage effort on the year.

Horner was the lone player to record a double-double tonight, adding 11 rebounds to his 25-point game. Smith (21 points), L.D. Williams (16 points, 4 steals), Johnson (13 points, 3 blocks), Jeff Foote (12 points, 8 rebounds), Curry (12 points, 7 assists, 0 turnovers), Eugene Spates (12 points) and Knowles (11 points, 7 rebounds) all scored in double figures tonight.

Iowa got a team-high 20 points from Mike Efevberha and Patrick Ewing, Jr. scored 18 in the losing effort.

The Armor outrebounded the Energy 44-33 and held Iowa to 31-85 (.365) shooting from the field.

The Armor will put their win streak on the line when they host the Bakersfield Jam on Monday at 6:00 PM inside the MassMutual Center for the two teams' only meeting of the 2011-12 regular season. The Armor will then have a week off for the D-League's All-Star break.
