West Texas Roughnecks News Release

MIDLAND, TX - In a key non-divisional match-up, the West Texas Roughnecks could not complete a come-from-behind win as the Arkansas Diamonds held on to win 41-29. The Diamonds struck first in the ball game as QB Willie Copeland found WR Steven Savoy for a 37-yard touchdown pass on the second play from scrimmage making it 7-0.

The Roughnecks cut the deficit to 7-6 following a five-play drive as WR Josh Floyd found the end-zone on a one-yard touchdown run. Arkansas would expand their lead to 24-6 when DB Vickiel Vaughn intercepted QB Tommy Jones returning it 20 yards for a touchdown. Following that score, QB Willie Copeland hooked up with WR Ricardo Lenhart for a 10-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter.

The Roughnecks switched the momentum in their favor when RB DeWayne Hogan posted a four-yard touchdown pass to make it 24-13. After forcing a missed field goal attempt, the Roughnecks drove 39 yards down the field and capped the series off with a four-yard touchdown run from Jorvorskie Lane to make it 24-20. Arkansas would tack on a late field goal to take a 27-20 lead into halftime.

The Roughnecks would shut-out the Arkansas offense in the third quarter and record a Zeke Arevalo field goal only to trail 27-23 going into the fourth quarter. The Roughnecks were on the move in the fourth quarter looking to take the lead but WR Josh Floyd fumbled the football following a 25-yard reception. Following the fumble recovery by the Arkansas defense, Diamonds RB Dedrick Poole recorded a 47-yard touchdown run to give the Diamonds a 34-23 lead. The Roughnecks fought back later in the quarter as DeWayne Hogan added his second rushing touchdown (one yard) to cut the lead to 34-29.

The Roughnecks defense stepped up in a big way with four minutes remaining in regulation as DB Braelon Davis intercepted Copeland setting up the Roughnecks with a first down at the 23-yard line. However, the Roughnecks could not convert on fourth down and three, and the Diamonds capitalized off the change-of-possession with a long touchdown pass from Copeland to Steven Savoy to seal the win at 41-29.
