Fans of Arizona United SC and FC Tucson have been rivals for years. But the two clubs met on the pitch for the first time ever, and United came away with a 3-1 victory at the Desert Diamond Cup.

"I felt we did a good job of keeping (the attack) going," said Arizona United head coach Frank Yallop. "An important part of the game is to come back from when you let down and concede a goal. We came right back and did a good job to score two late ones."

The match was played as three frames of 30 minutes. The teams went scoreless in the first 30 minutes. Then Arizona United's Gibson Bardsley scored the match's first goal when he came across the box and redirected a shot past the goalkeeper.

FC Tucson responded quickly, equalizing the match 12 minutes later. Then Arizona United put the match away in the final 30-minute frame.

Forward Chris Cortes scored both late goals. The first came off a Cortes header that beat the goalkeeper near post. The second came when Cortes corralled a cross in the middle of the penalty area and fired a shot past the diving keeper.

"In our last game, we didn't score any goals, so that was our main focus this game," said midfielder Jose 'Chiva' Cuevas. "(Last Saturday) I thought we did well defensively. We did well in the midfield. We just needed that end product. And I think today we showed that we can do it and it's just going to keep getting better and better."

Added Yallop: "I like what I've seen. I think we've done a good job of keeping the ball well and creating a bunch of chances and on another day we could've scored more goals."
