Peoria, AZ - Midfielder Luke Rooney scored a goal that fans will long remember, but the match was one they'd soon rather forget following a 2-1 loss to Los Angeles Galaxy II at Peoria Sports Complex.
"I wouldn't say we deserved to win but you know you look at it, and it's frustrating to make mistakes at the wrong times," said Arizona United head coach Frank Yallop.
He later added: "It's a combination of poor closing down on our half, (not staying) with runners and we don't challenge the ball. Just all the things that we work on but we seem to get punished on most of those things."
Los Dos took the early lead thanks to an Ariel Lassiter goal in the 16th minute. A little over ten minutes later, Rooney electrified the crowd in the 28th minute with his highlight-reel goal.
Following a free kick, defender Peter Ramage headed the ball high into the air. Before the ball landed back on the ground, Rooney swung his left foot and smashed a shot into the top right corner of the net from the top of the box.
The goal made it 1-1 and that would be the score heading into the half.
"Yeah in the last couple weeks, I've had a couple of decent goals but I'd obviously swap that out for three points for the team," Rooney said. "Sounds a little cliché. ... but we got a couple more games to hopefully turn it around."
Los Dos forward Adonis Amaya tallied the game winner in the 73rd minute. Amaya forced a turnover deep in the Arizona United defensive end and beat goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski one-on-one to take the 2-1 lead.
Arizona United SC heads back on the road this weekend for a showdown with San Antonio FC. The clubs square off on Sunday, September 4 at 3 P.M. Fans can watch a stream of the match at Arizona United's official watch party at the Rose and Crown Pub in downtown Phoenix (628 E. Adams St.).
