FC Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - A goal in the dying minutes of the game helped FC Montreal to a 2-2 tie against Wilmington Hammerheads FC, this Wednesday night at the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex. FC Montreal is now unbeaten in five straight games.
Alessandro Riggi and Anthony Jackson-Hamel scored for the locals, while Austin Martz and Kyle Parker tallied for the Hammerheads.
FC Montreal scored in the 13th minute when Alessandro Riggi cut in the middle to pass in front of the box to Philippe Lincourt-Joseph, who gave him the ball back behind the defenders. Alone in the box, Riggi beat goalkeeper John Smits.
In the 21st minute, Montreal goalkeeper David Paulmin was forced to dive to his left and make a spectacular save on Liam Miller's shot from outside the box.
Before halftime, Miller tried again when he got the ball after Paulmin punched a cross away. Defender Nevello Yoseke blocked his shot on the goal line.
Paulmin got injured after a contact with Matthew Barnes-Homer in the first half and was replaced by Luca Leone for the second half.
Wilmington then scored twice to take the lead in the game.
In the 73rd, Austin Martz scored when he picked up a Barnes-Homer pass in front of the net.
Right after, in the 80th minute, after a cross from the left flank in Montreal's box, Kyle Parker scored on a header.
The Bleu-blanc-noir pushed to equalize and succeeded in the 89th minute. After a long clearance, Badreddine Boulajoul sent the ball to Jackson-Hamel with his head. The forward beat the defenders with his speed before scoring past Smits to make it 2-2.
"It wasn't so bad considering that this wasn't our best game this season," said Philippe Lincourt-Joseph. "We showed character to come back in the second half. We need to improve the moments where we are not focused enough. We would have still hoped for a better result."
"I think the tie game is a good result considering the way we played," said assistant coach Simon Gatti. "We had players out of position and a change of goalkeeper in the second half. When it's complicated technically, you need to find solutions to get a result and that's what we did."
FC Montreal will play its next game on Saturday, September 3, at 3pm against Louisville City FC at the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex.
