Arizona United Eyes Strong Finish to 2016 in Portland
September 23, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Phoenix Rising FC News Release
Arizona United Soccer Club at Portland Timbers 2
Saturday, September 24 @ 7:00 P.M. | Merlo FieldÂ
Week 26 - Arizona United Soccer Club finishes its 2016 campaign this Saturday, September 24, on the road in Portland, Oregon to take on Portland Timbers 2. Kickoff is at 7:00 P.M. This will be the third consecutive year the team ends the season on the road.
Last season, Arizona United SC was also out of the playoffs by the time the final match of the year rolled around. But goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski had one of the best games of his career, making several highlight-reel worthy saves en route to a 0-0 draw against Sacramento Republic FC.
"It made me ready to get back out (on the field)," Woszczynski said of his 2015 end-of-the-year performance. "You don't want to be done yet. Nobody wants to miss the playoffs. You end the season on a good note and it gets you excited throughout the whole offseason to work hard for next year."
Woszczynski also talked about about how similar this weekend's match will be to the home-season finale last week.
"We knew we were out already, but we were playing for pride and I think we put together some great soccer, some great passing sequences and some good goals," said Woszczynski of the club's 3-2 win over Real Monarchs SLC. "I just think we need to have the same attitude. Come out. Fight. It's a lot of a pride thing."
Arizona United SC will be hosting an official watch party for the final match of the season. The party will be at Dubina Brewing Company (17035 N 67th Ave #6, Glendale, AZ 85308). Fans are encouraged to start arriving at 6:30 P.M. for the 7:00 P.M. kickoff.
Scouting Report: T2 is just one point out of the final playoff spot and needs a draw or a win against Arizona United for a chance to get in. They are red hot coming into the match, having won four matches in a row and outscoring opponents 9-1 in that span. The good news: Arizona United had that one goal. ¯_(ã??)_/¯
Previous meeting: Arizona United SC appeared to have a hard-fought draw locked up, but then forward Villyan Bijev scored a stoppage-time game winner to give T2 a 2-1 win.
