Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Victor Arano turned in a strong seven innings on Superhero and Sci-Fi Night, but the Clearwater Threshers suffered a 5-1 loss to the Brevard County Manatees in the series finale at Bright House Field.

Arano (4-12) matched a season-high with his seven innings of work, limiting the Manatees to three runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out four.

Brevard County (24-30) broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning, when Clint Coulter and Garrett Cooper connected for back-to-back solo homers to give the Manatees the 2-0 edge.

An inning later, Clearwater (34-22) cut that deficit in half.

Derek Campbell got it going with a lead-off single to left, and Jesmuel Valentin followed by sending a double to left-center. Carlos Tocci lined out to short, but Dylan Cozens pulled a grounder to the right side that permitted Campbell to score, pulling the Threshers to within one.

That was the only run the Threshers would manage against Javier Salas (8-8), who gave the Manatees six innings in the start.

Arano had permitted just four hits until the seventh inning, when Cooper and Rafael Neda kicked off the frame with consecutive singles.

One out later, Michael Ratterree singled to center to score Cooper, but Tocci fielded and fired in to third to nab Neda for the second out. Ratterree took second on the throw.

Steven Halcomb then stepped in and served an 0-1 pitch into right, and Cozens charged and tossed in a strike to home to gun down Ratterree and end the inning.

Miguel Nunez worked a scoreless eighth but permitted a two-run triple to Halcomb in the ninth, snapping his scoreless innings streak at 21.1.

The homestand continues on Sunday as the Threshers welcome in the Daytona Tortugas for a three-game series, starting at 1 p.m. Nick Routt (5-3) takes the hill against Matt Imhof (7-4), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 12:45 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
