Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - In what might have been the lowest collective scoring output in a series this season, the Stone Crabs and Hammerheads played three great games if pitching is your thing. Before a cheery crowd of 3,385 on Saturday night, Hunter Wood and Luis Castillo went toe-to-toe in the finale. Despite both righthanders' best efforts, the Stone Crabs struggling offense overshadowed everything else once again. With just three hits all night, two Hammerheads runs in the ninth were more than enough as they left town with a sweep to send Charlotte to its seventh straight loss.
Wood put a runner on with one out in each of his first two innings, but would get the next two hitters on a night when he pitched his best in any of his three home starts. Unfortunately, the Stone Crabs best chance came in the second off Castillo, who lit up the radar gun with several fastballs at 98. Mike Marjama led off the home second with a hard single before Maxx Tissenbaum and Justin Williams flied out the opposite way into left. Granden Goetzman then took advantage of the howling wind, and tucked a 1-2 pitch inside the right field line for his 14th double to put runners at second and third. Jace Conrad came up and went down with a groundout to first, starting a string of 18 straight set down by Hammerheads pitchers.
Austin Dean led off the fourth with a single into right center, and would later steal second for his 16th stolen base of the season. Wood then retired the next eight hitters before Dean singled off him again with two outs in the sixth, but Brian Anderson would ground out to Wood to end the inning. During his final turn in the seventh, Wood struck out a pair for a total of six, finishing with 101 pitches (69 strikes) for the night.
Castillo retired the last 10 batters he faced before coming out for lefthander Sam Alvis at the end of the fifth. Alvis got off to a fast start too, striking out a batter in perfect innings in the sixth and seventh. He finally made a mistake when he walked Conrad during a lengthy at bat with two outs in the eighth. The third baseman stole second, but stayed there as Braxton Lee went down swinging on a 3-2 pitch for the final out.
That fateful ninth inning began with a bunt single to third from Dean, who accounted for half his team's hits with his third single. Josh Kimborowicz, who got the final out in the eighth, got Anderson to ground into a fielder's choice that nabbed Dean at second for the first out. On the very next pitch, Harold Riggins clobbered his 15th double to straightaway center for a 1-0 lead. Lee's throw skipped two cutoff men and allowed Riggins to advance to third with just one out. Following a strikeout of James Roberts, Kimborowicz fell behind 2-0 on Blake Barber, who brought in the final run with a hard double to left center. Chris Mazza got the last three outs in the ninth, working around a leadoff single from Hector Guevara and leaving the tying run at the plate for his second save. The Stone Crabs ended the series by failing to score in the final 21 innings as they were shutout for the second straight night and 11th time overall.
The homestand continues on Sunday at 4:00 PM when the St. Lucie Mets arrive at Charlotte Sports Park to start a three game series. All kids 13 and under eat FREE with the purchase of a regular priced ticket, so visit www.stonecrabsbaseball.com or call 941-206-HITS (4487) to order your tickets now!
