Tri-City Dust Devils News Release
A dropped pop-up in the top of the 9th inning allowed two runs to score for the Everett AquaSox (12-9 2H, 42-42), breaking a 1-1 tie and giving the visitors a 3-1 win over the Tri-City Dust Devils (8-13 2H, 37-47) Sunday night at Gesa Stadium.
Early on the game was a pitchers' duel, one of several in the series, as the Dust Devils' Brent Killam and the AquaSox's Prelander Berroa both threw four scoreless innings. Berroa's innings were no-hit innings as well, with Gabe Matthews drawing a 4th inning walk to end any notion of a perfect game.
Everett then opened the scoring in the 5th inning, when Dariel Gomez hit a home run the opposite way off the scoreboard for a 1-0 lead. The homer was Gomez's Northwest League-leading 17th of the season.
The AquaSox bullpen continued a no-hit bid into the 7th inning, when Tri-City's Mike Peabody lined a two-out double to the right field wall to end the no-hitter. Steven Rivas followed with a chopper off the plate that found its way through the left side of the infield, scoring Peabody to tie the game.
In the 9th, Hayden Seig (3-1) faced a two-out, two-on situation with James Parker at the plate. Seig induced a pop-up to the right side of the infield, but Jose Guzman could not haul it in. The drop allowed both Alberto Rodriguez and Gomez to score, giving Everett a 3-1 lead.
Max Roberts retired the Dust Devils in order in the 9th for his first save of the season. Peyton Alford (3-0) got the win in relief, with the AquaSox taking the series four games to two.
Tri-City, and organized baseball, now takes the All-Star Break, with the Dust Devils resuming action at 7:05 p.m. Friday, July 22nd, at Ron Tonkin Field against the Hillsboro Hops in the first of a three-game series.
