Rochester Red Wings News Release

Four Red Wings pitchers - Virgil Vasquez, Anthony Slama, Daniel Turpen and Jason Lane - combined on a three-hit shutout as Rochester blanked the Pawtucket Red Sox, 6-0, Thursday afternoon at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.

The quartet of pitchers combined to strikeout 10 Paw Sox while issuing no walks. Vasquez got the start and allowed all three hits in three innings of work. Slama, a regular at the backend of the Red Wings bullpen over the last four years, worked two perfect innings with three strikeouts in relief.

Lane, who hit 26 home runs as an outfielder for the Houston Astros in 2005, struck out three in two innings to complete the shutout as he continues his conversion from the batter's box to the pitcher's mound - a transition he started full-time last season.

The offense was led by catching prospect Josmil Pinto who knocked in four runs including a two-run home run. Pinto hit .295 with 14 home runs and 60 RBI last season between Ft. Myers (A) and New Britain (AA).

Reynaldo Rodriquez, signed as a minor league free agent in December, was the only other Red Wing to collect multiple hits going 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base. Rodriguez hit 16 home runs for Double-A Portland (Boston) last season.

The Red Wings visit the Durham Bulls on Friday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Twins Notes:

On Thursday, the Minnesota Twins optioned right-handed pitcher Kyle Gibson and left-handed pitcher Caleb Thielbar to Rochester. Gibson, the 5th ranked prospect in the Twins system according to Baseball America, missed most of 2012 after recovering from "Tommy John" surgery. Meanwhile, Thielbar went 3-1 with 3.57 ERA in 25 games with the Red Wings last season.

Additionally, the Twins reassigned right-handed pitcher Anthony Slama, catcher Kyle Knudson and infielder James Beresford to minor league camp Thursday.

The Twins now have 51 players in camp: 24 pitchers (7 non-roster), 6 catchers (3 non-roster), 11 infielders (6 non-roster) and 10 outfielders (3 non-roster).
