Lexington County Blowfish News Release
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Lexington County has rebounded all season against the Florence RedWolves. Tonight though, another tough loss was in the cards for the Blowfish.
The Fish fell to the Wolves by the final score of 12-8 after taking a one run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning.
Things started off rough for the Blowfish in the bottom half of the first after Florence scored three runs some aided by errors. Trey Jacobs (UNCG) facilitated one of those runs with an RBI single.
The Blowfish cut the lead to one when Clint Car (Valdosta State) knocked a two run single up the hole to plate Dalton Ewing (Coastal Carolina) and Deric Boone (Auburn Montgomery).
The bottom of the second was unkind to the Fish though as Florence brought home three more runs most aided by errors to extend their lead back to four.
Lexington County stayed in the game though and added another run in the third on the sacrifice fly from Ewing cutting the lead back in half.
But in the home half of the third, Florence pushed the lead back up to four on an RBI single from Roger Hall III (Norfolk State) through the hole into right field.
The mentality of the Blowfish all night was to keep fighting and that they did in the top half of the fifth when they brought home three runs in the inning; RBI singles from Ewing and Derek Olenchuk (Newberry) cut the lead to two and then a double steal allowed Ewing to swipe home pushing the score to 7-6.
In the sixth the Fish finally broke even on a run scoring error that brought in Kyle Carruthers (UNC-Asheboro).
In the home half of the sixth the RedWolves threatened but Will Smith (Presbyterian) came into a bases loaded, one out situation to strike out one Wolve and get another to ground out to escape the jam.
The Fish would reward their reliever in the eighth.
Lexington County loaded the bases with one out for Drew Ellis (The Citadel) who launched a SAC fly into left field scoring Carruthers from third giving the Blowfish their first lead of the night.
But as has been the case in the midst of their losing streak Lexington County wasn't able to hang on.
Three walks from Will Smith loaded the bases and with one out Lexington County turned things over to Jimmy Townsend-Chase (Western Michigan).
Townsend-Chase walked two RedWolves to allow Florence to tie and take the lead in the game then surrendered a bases clearing double down the right field line to Allan Beer giving Florence the 12-8 lead.
The Wolves shut the door on Lexington County in the ninth and the Blowfish fell for their fourth straight game and dropped to a game under .500.
Tomorrow night Lexington County comes back home for the second game of a home and home with the RedWolves. Coverage begins on z93.1 FM at 6:50 The Lake and first pitch from the Lex is slated for 7:05.
