Another Sunday Loss - Pioneers Fall at Brockton 9-1

Sunday, July 21, 2002 - Campanelli Stadium, Brockton, Mass.

The Pioneers dropped their 7th straight Sunday game, this time falling at the Brockton Rox 11-2 at Campanelli Stadium in front of 2969 fans.

Jeff Andra (6-5) got pinned with the loss for the Pioneers surrendering 12 hits for 9 runs, 7 earned. Andra's personal 2-game win streak came to a close with the setback.

Elmira has been outscored 57-13 in their last 7 Sunday losses including several blow-outs. A run-down of the Pioneers Sunday losses is listed below.

The Pioneers are 2-8 overall in day games and are 29-15 at night.

Brockton put the game away early with 3 runs in the 4th followed by a 5-run rally in the 5th sending Andra to the showers.

It was the most runs the Rox had ever scored at Campanelli Stadium and represented their largest margin of victory in the history of the franchise.

It was Elmira's 2nd worst loss of the season surpassed only by a 14-0 setback at New Jersey on 6/16, also a Sunday.

Mike Marchesano scattered 8 hits over 7ip allowing just 1 run with 0 bb's and 6 K's to improve to 6-4.

Brockton leads the season series 7 games to 6 with one remaining (Monday night).

Elmira is currently 4-2 on their 7-game road trip.

Osmani Garcia led the offense going 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in the 9th. Norm Hutchins and Rolando Bello hit back to back triples in the 3rd inning providing Elmira with their other run on the day. It tied the score at 1-1 at the time.

The Rox were led by Darrell nicholas who blasted a 3-run HR in their 5-run 5th inning. Nicholas finished with 4 rbi's. It was his 1st HR of the season. Mickael davis went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and an rbi.

Chris cosbey singled in the 1st, advanced to 3rd on a Saul Bustos double and scored on a Dan Graham as the Rox took a 1-0 lead.

Norm Hutchins hit a 2-out triple to left-center in the 3rd and Rolando Bello followed with a high fly that landed over LF Darrell Nicholas for a triple to tie the game.

Elmira threatened to take the lead in the 4th placing runners at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs on singles by Quero and Garcia but Kyle Perry struck out to end the inning.

Brockton scored 3 runs in the 4th sparked by 3 straight hits to begin the rally. Jake Daubert singled up the middle and scored on a Michael Davis double to right-center. Darrell Nicholas singld up the middle making it 3-1. Michael Landry bunted Nicholas to 2nd. Carlos Rosario bounced to SS Bobby Hill but he threw it high over Brian Jones for an E6 extending the inning for Chris Cosbey's squeeze bunt scoring Nicholas giving Brockton a 4-1 advantage.

In the 5th, still against Andra, Chris Hall hit a one-out single. Michael Davis hit a single too deep in the hole at SS for Bobby Hill to have a play. Nicholas launched a 3-run HR to center making the score 7-1. Michael Landry doubled down the LF line and moved up on a Carlos Rosario infield single as Osmani Garcia couldn't come with a play on a slow grounder. Chris Cosbey doubled to right-center scoring Landry to make the score 8-1.

Andra made way for Chris Brown at that point. Saul Bustos hit a grounder to Garcia at 3rd but the ball took a tough hop and Garcia was charged with a tough E5 that allowed Rosario to score an unearned run putting Brockton up 9-1.

The Rox scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th off Kenji Iwahara. Saul Bustos beat out an infield single. Dan Graham reached on an E6 with a ground-ball up the middle getting underneath the glove of SS bobby Hill. The runners advanced on a balk to 2nd and 3rd. Chris Hall hit sac-fly to RF scoring Bustos and Jake Daubert bounced out to drive in Graham for Brockton's final run.

Osmani Garcia closed the margin to 11-2 with a high triple to left-center leading off the 9th against Jess Siciliano. The throw got away from the 3rd baseman and Garcia scored on the error on the same play.

The road-trip finale is Monday night at 7. LH Sean Brummett (6-2, 2.16) will start for the Pioneers against RH Rodney Allen (0-1, 2.84).
