Another Homecoming Heartbreaker for the Westchester Knicks
January 24, 2015 - NBA G League (G League)
Westchester Knicks News Release
WHITE PLAINS, January 24, 2015 - It was a sight the Westchester Knicks (8-18) are much too familiar with as they lost a last second heartbreaker at home 93-92 to the Texas Legends (14-10), the NBA Development League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks.
Badgered by injuries, the starting lineup for Westchester was shaken up from the usually stagnant group. The Legends hit the basket first, but the first quarter was mostly back and forth action as the Knicks kept the pace. Turnovers dogged both teams but only amounted to six points for Westchester, two for Texas. Mid-quarter, a slam from Texas forward Renaldo Balkman drew reactions from the crowd of Knicks fans, who might remember Balkman as a former New York draft pick. Texas was lifted in the first as ten different Legends scored at least one point.
The Knicks began their creep up to Texas, winning the second quarter by a point but still slightly training the Legends. Westchester struggled from the line, only connecting on 5-of-9 free throw attempts. Darnell Jackson led all scorers in the half with 11 points with Thanasis Antetokounmpo showing his brute on defense with six rebounds, three steals, and a blocked shot. The Legends kept it a true team effort with all players making solid contributions to lead at the half 48-43.
Westchester took the lead 63-61 with 5:42 left in the third with a beaut of a jumper from Walker Russell Jr. off the assist from Andre Barrett. With the heat officially turned up, Antetokounmpo channeled the energy into a slam so hard he knocked himself to the ground. The lead would not last long enough for the Knicks who shot themselves in the foot with turnovers to give Texas the edge heading into the final quarter.
Westchester tied it back up with 6:35 on the clock with a jump shot from Andre Barrett. Barrett found his timing once again with 38 seconds on the clock knocking down a perfect three to push the Knicks to a five point lead. Texas answered with a lay-up from forward Eric Griffin to keep it close but it was a clear path foul from Knicks guard Walker Russell Jr. that sparked what would be an exhilarating 20 seconds. Legends guard Doron Lamb hit both of his throws to put Texas within one point of the Knicks. Fouled by Legends guard Mike James, Darnell Jackson was unable to connect on either free throw to keep the score the same, Knicks leading by one. With yet another foul on Russell Jr., Texas went to the line again. Missing his first shot, Lamb buckled under the pressure to miss the second as well. With just a second on the clock, a foul from Darnell Jackson gave the Legends a chance to make a move. Despite a deafening roar from the crowd, Eric Griffin connected on both shots to send the Legends over the edge to lead Westchester 93-92. Thanasis Antetokounmpo lobbed up a shot with milliseconds to go but it would miss to give the Legends the game, the final score 93-92.
The Westchester Knicks play next at the Westchester County Center for a back-to-back contest with the Sioux Falls Skyforce starting Friday, Jan. 24 at 7:00 p.m. The game Friday will be broadcast live on MSG, YouTube, and AM 1230 WFAS.
