Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
HIDALGO, TX: February 4, 2005 â The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 welcomed another addition from last season's Tennessee Valley Vipers squad, as they have been assigned wide receiver / defensive back Marquis Floyd by the af2 for the 2005 season. "Marquis is a very versatile player that can be a two way player or a defensive specialist, and he can return kicks," said Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy. "He is exciting to watch and comes in with high expectations, and with one more year of experience, he could be ready to advance to the next level."
Floyd, a 24 year-old native of Monroe, Georgia, joins the Dorados with one year of af2 experience after spending last season under Coach Guy with the Tennessee Valley Vipers. As a two-way player for the Vipers, he ranked second on the team defensively with 37 tackles (27 solo) and led the team in pass breakups with 17. On offense, Floyd ranked fifth on the team with 281 all-purpose yards, which included 242 receiving yards off 20 receptions and 7 rushing yards off 5 attempts. He registered six touchdowns on the season (3 receiving, 2 rushing, 1 kickoff return) and was the Vipers ADT Defensive Player of the Game in Week 15 against Quad City and the Ironman of the Game in Week 16 against Memphis.
The 6'0" 190-pounder turned pro after an exceptional four year career (1999-2002) at the University of West Georgia (Carrollton, GA), where he was a three-time American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-American. He notched 231 tackles in four seasons (164 solo) and 19 interceptions. Floyd also returned kickoffs (248 yards on 12 returns) and was an elite punt return specialist. He holds the school's all-time punt return yards record with 982 yards off 125 returns, which is the second most in Gulf South Conference History. Floyd closed out his college career participating in the 2003 Cactus Bowl Division II all-star classic in Kingsville.
The addition of Floyd to the Dorados roster gives them 15 members announced to the 2005 roster, joining Brian Baker (QB), John Bradley (OL/DL), J.R. Davies (QB), Sterling Finney (WR/DB), Wil Goff (OL/DL), Will Goodloe (OL/DL), Josh Kellett (QB), Joseph Lemberg (OS), Moses Lewis (TBD), Travis McAlpine (WR/DB), Ben McCombs (DE, FB/LB), David Morrill (FB/LB), Pierre Thomas (WR/DB) and Josh Tubbs (OL/DL).
