Another Blue Anchors rally falls short in loss to Border Cats

Thunder Bay, Ontario - The Alexandria Blue Anchors nearly completed another comeback against the Thunder Bay Border Cats Wednesday night as the fell 9-7 at Tbaytel Park. The Anchors' record is now 3-13.

Alexandria grabbed a quick lead as Kris Goodman doubled to start the game and went to third on a Ryan Busch single. Goodman scored on a single from Roman Collins and Busch came around on a two-out single by Dalton Leuschke making the score 2-0.

The lead was extended in the second. Bergren singled with one out and Goodman homered to left to put the Anchors up 4-0. Busch singled and would eventually score on a Ricky Sanchez fielder's choice giving Alexandria a 5-0 advantage.

The Border Cats got on the board against Tyler Brekke as they pulled off a double steal of second and home allowing Robb Paller to score the Cats' first run.

Thunder Bay pulled closer in the bottom of the fifth as they scored three runs on just one hit but five walks. All three runs scored on bases-loaded walks to Tyler Patterson, Ty Blankmeyer and Tyler Rolland.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cats grabbed a lead in part to two Blue Anchors errors. Sal Taormina drove in one with a base hit and another bases-loaded walk brought home Kyle Hann giving Thunder Bay a 6-5 lead.

Sloppy defense again allowed the Border Cats to get some insurance runs. Rolland and Cory Kay both reached to start the frame and came around when a throw from Ben Allen got away from Sanchez on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Nick Struder scored on a Paller sacrifice fly giving Thunder Bay a 9-5 lead.

Things got interesting in the top of the ninth as the Anchors put together one last rally. With two outs, Aaron Gretz collected an infield single and scored on a Leuschke double. Allen then collected a single to move Leuschke to third. An RBI single by Lukas Hermanson scored Leuschke and Jake Bergren singled to load the bases. Goodman launched a ball to left-center field for what appeared to be a double off the bat but a leaping catch at the wall ended the rally and the game as the Anchors fell 9-7.

Brekke finished the night with 3.1 innings pitched and four runs allowed on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Froom (0-1) took tough loss giving up two unearned runs on one hit and three walks. Aaron Rozek finished the game pitching three innings allowing three runs on four hits and one walk with three punch outs.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Kris Goodman (CF) - The University of Iowa outfielder was named Northwoods League Player of the Night as he collected three hits in five trips to the plate collected two RBI and scoring twice.
