Angel City FC News Release
KANSAS CITY - Angel City Football Club travels to Kansas City as they prepare for their match at Children's Mercy Park on Friday, September 1 at 5:00 p.m., streaming live on Paramount+. Interim Head Coach Becki Tweed and defender Jasmyne Spencer discussed the upcoming match against the Current, the fight for a playoff spot, and the team's recent chemistry.
ACFC Defender Jasmyne Spencer
On the teams camaraderie right now:
"Everyone's been really excited. We've definitely had to manage that excitement off the back of the win on the weekend and refocus ahead of the game tomorrow. We're just really pumped to be in the midst of this playoff push and still have full control of our destiny."
On how her role has changed under the direction of Becki Tweed:
"I don't know how much it's changed, but she's definitely given me the freedom to play anywhere on the right side, which I always thought was something that I could bring to the team."
"I love playing up top. Anybody who's followed my career knows how much I love being a forward. Her belief in me and returning me to that position when needed has been a ton of fun. I've always been versatile and been able to take up multiple roles on the team. So I don't know how much it's really changed, but it's been really utilized under Becki."
On Julie Ertz retirement:
"We're really grateful that she chose us to make her come back. To be able to watch her compete at the highest level again has been incredible and we wish her well. She's a super mom and we're really excited to see what she does next. Honestly, beyond that we've just had to turn our focus back to our playoff push."
On how competitive the match with Kansas City Current will be with both teams fighting for the playoffs:
"It's going to be tough. To be honest, it's no different than any other game in the NWSL. I can say that this season is unique and that usually there's people who are pretty close to securing a playoff spot and people who are pretty close to being eliminated. However, top to bottom is so tight right now."
"Everyone's still competing for a playoff spot, which is really exciting. It's awesome for the league, but we're not treating this as any different than any other game we have all season. We know how competitive it's going to be. We're just really trying to focus on ourselves and execute."
ACFC Interim Head Coach Becki Tweed
On Julie Ertz retirement announcement:
"We are grateful. What she's done for the game has been incredible. This has been an incredibly hard decision for her and I know that she's not crazily at peace with it. She's an all-in person and she has soccer, she has family and a child. We all respect the decision and we're really grateful and thankful for her career and what she's done for the sport."
"She will always be a part of Angel City. We wish her the best and we will definitely miss her, but respect everything that she's done and her incredible career. I couldn't be more happy that she can go out and be with their family."
On the challenges KC Current might present:
"It's never easy to play Friday after a Sunday game. It feels like a two game week almost, especially when you need to go on the road. However, coming off a win is massive for us as a group. Training and the vibe has been brilliant. We're all in a space now where there is belief that we want to keep pushing on and moving forward. Everyone's in it for each other, everyone's in it for the group."
"We just need to continue to push forward. Kansas City is in a similar position that they're still pushing for something this season, have been in a little more form lately and had some good results. What you'll see is a good game, two competitive teams that are really fighting for something. It's going to be a good one."
On the most satisfying part of taking over the head coach job:
"The buy-in from the group, which is really important for me. You sit in a room with the group and there is a huge buy-in, everybody wants the same outcome. Everybody wants the same end result come the end of the year."
"As an individual, you may struggle through one week, but there's understanding, transparency, and honesty. As long as you can have all those things, people want to compete and play for each other, for the team and for the club. It's an incredible group of players that are close on-and-off the field and we continue to push for each other."
