Columbus Cottonmouths News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Fan favorite, Andrew Loewen, will not be returning to the ice to protect the net for the Snakes. Loewen's drive off the ice made him the success he was on the ice. This Winnipeg native had a long and inspiring career starting at Canisius College.
Right out of college, the Snakes knew that Loewen had potential. In 2010, the Columbus Cottonmouths signed Andrew. Since his first season with the Snakes, Loewen has played for two ECHL teams, the South Carolina Stingrays and the Gwinnett Gladiators.
Throughout Loewen's five year career with the Snakes, he earned 84 career wins, 13 career shutouts, a .918 career save percentage and a career 2.53 goals against average.
Some of his personal accolades include:
League record 6 shutouts in one season (13-14)
League record 1.74 Goals Against Average (12-13)
League record .945 save percentage (12-13)
League record 191:07 scoreless streak (12-13)
Team record 11 game win streak (12-13)
He also sported a 4-3 record with a 2.58 goals against average, .921 save percentage and 1 shutout in leading the snakes to the 2014 President's Cup Championship
Andrew's reputation with the Snakes will not only be remembered by his play in net, but also by his dedication to the fans. Snakes fans not only fell in love with his boyish charm and wide smile, but also his dance moves. His patented third period "wobble" with the kids in the home tunnel turned into a YouTube sensation garnering over a million hits as well as requests for interviews in his home Province of Manitoba, Canada .
Loewen made a statement to thank the Cottonmouths' faithful fans:
"Snake Friends,
I wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to the Columbus/Phenix City community. I have put much thought into my decision to hang up my skates for the start of the Columbus Cottonmouths' 2015/16 season. I have been extremely fortunate to play hockey for such an amazing organization with the best fans in the SPHL. I would not change a moment over the past 5 seasons. I am truly thankful for your support and friendship.
My wife Morgan and I are excited to continue making the Chattahoochee Valley our home where we hope to raise a family. Morgan will continue to teach first grade in MCSD and I will continue my venture in the real world working as a District Sales Coordinator with Aflac.
I have one request from all of you... Please continue to say hi and never be a stranger. More importantly you haven't seen the last of me at the Snake Pit!
Go Snakes, Go Snakes, Go Snakes, Go!!!"
