Anderson Wins Three in a Row Against its In-State Rival
June 29, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release
Knowing they were in great hands with ace starter Jean Granado, the Joes offense took to the scoring Friday night, as Anderson mounted a nearly flawless effort in all aspects to defeat Aiken, 10-2, in front of 1,577 at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Granado threw the first nine-inning complete game in Joes history, scattering six hits and two runs -- both solo home runs for Aiken by Garth McKinney in the third and Scott Houin in the ninth inning -- while striking out a South Coast League-record 15 and walking only one.
Offensively for Anderson, (10-27) the Joes matched a team record with 10 runs and set a team record with 17 hits. Kevin Noles went 4-for-5 with a run and RBI, while Tanner Rogers went 3-for-4 while matching a team-record with four RBI. Every Joes starter, including Granado, had a hit in the game. Eight of the starting nine either scored or drove in a run.
With his 15-strikeout performance, Granado vaulted from out of the league's top five in Ks to snatching the lead from Bradenton's Lavelle Morgan and Rocky Collis with 52. Granado made his return after missing a start with a slightly tweaked right ankle he suffered at Aiken (19-17) on June 23.
"I have never had 15 strikeouts in my life," Granado said through teammate and translator Hector Borg. "I threw a lot of fastballs and two-strike changeups. ...It feels great; I just do the best I can to help the team win."
The win marks just the second time this year Anderson has won back-to-back games (June 8-9 @ Charlotte County) and the second time it has won a series. Aiken sees its season-worst losing streak hit six games in a row as the Foxhounds now sit just one game above .500.
Granado improved to 4-2 with the win, while Foxhounds starter Brian Grijalva dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
Aiken's lead in the Palmetto Series presented by Fairchild Roofing now stands at 7-4, as Anderson has taken three in a row against its in-state rival.
The Joes attempt to sweep their first opponent of the season when the teams meet up again Saturday night at 7:05.
