Redfish Keep it Close in Defeat

June 29, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- It was a soggy afternoon in Albany, Georgia as rain delayed the start of the game between the Charlotte County Redfish and the South Georgia Peanuts. Redfish starter, Michael Oberg (0-2), and Peanuts' starter, Shannon Wirth (7-0) faced off for the second time in a week. The game went back and forth early but the Peanuts got a late surge to pull ahead of the Redfish, 9-3.

The Redfish had base runners in the first two innings against Wirth but couldn't advance them past first base. The Redfish changed that in the 3rd inning PJ Lehmann and Millard Dawson came around to score on Jose Gutierrez single to right and the Redfish were up 2-0. The Peanuts responded as Shannon Wirth helped his own cause by hitting a single and coming around to score. Mike Caruso and Joey Hooft would also plate and the Peanuts were up 3-2.

In the 4th inning, the Redfish got the leadoff man on, but Wirth got some help from his defense as they turned a double play. Charlotte County got the leadoff hitter on in every inning but the 2nd and the 9th. Peanuts pitching, though forced the Redfish to ground into 4 double plays on the night. Oberg kept the Peanuts in check with a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning.

South Georgia added another run in the bottom of the 5th to make it a 4-2 game, but the Redfish were not out of it. Jason Hurst, who started in only his second game with the Redfish, drilled a solo homerun to start the 6th inning and move the Redfish within a run, 4-3. Hurst finished the night 3-for-4 with two singles to go along with the solo shot. The Redfish also got a great night from a familiar place, but unfamiliar person. Aaron Simmons, who had played infield for Charlotte County, came out of the bullpen and pitched 2 strong innings and allowed only 1 ER on 3 hits. He also struck out 2 and walked 1.

The Redfish will look to end the month of the June of a winning note tomorrow night, June 30th, in the series finale against the Peanuts. The Redfish will send LHP Tommy Sutton to the hill for his first start of the season. First pitch is set of 7:05 PM.
