June 29, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, won a series for the sixth consecutive time with a 9-3 victory over the Charlotte County Redfish. Shannon Wirth got his league-leading seventh win of the season while Steve Garrabrants hit his seventh home run of the year.

Charlotte County got on top first in the top of the second inning by scoring two runs on three hits in an inning where five Redfish players got on against Wirth. Both runs scored on a Jose Gutierrez single.

The Peanuts were able to answer right back in the bottom of the third inning. Three hits and three walks led to three runs being scored. The Peanuts could have made it an even bigger inning but a double-play with the bases loaded brought the frame to an end.

South Georgia put up another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Doc Brooks singled Mike Caruso in. The Redfish were able to answer that one run as Jason Hurst led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to make the game 4-3.

The Peanuts put up two more runs in the seventh inning and then put it away in the bottom of the eighth. After Redfish pitcher Justin Wichert hit both Johnny Washington and Joey Hooft, Steve Garrabrants came up to the plate and jacked one over the left field wall to give the Peanuts the 9-3 advantage.

Shannon Wirth pitched six innings allowing three runs on 10 hits. The performance made Wirth 7-0 on the season. Jared Doyle and Ja Jones pitched an in inning each allowing no runs on one hit. Drew Shetrone pitched a perfect ninth inning striking out the side.

Garrabrants ended up 1-2 with two runs and three RBI. Joey Hooft went 2-4 with three runs and an RBI while Doc Brooks was 2-5 with two RBI.

South Georgia is now 26-9 on the season. The magic number for clinching the first half championship is down to eight. Chris Webb gets the start in the series finale on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:10. Tickets are available at the Peanuts box office or online at southgeotgiapeanuts.com. The game can be heard on "1450 The Fan" and online at southgeorgiapeanuts.com.
