Anderson Whiffs 11 in 4-2 Victory Over Flyers

JOLIET, IL - Devin Anderson struck out a season high 11 hitters as the Joliet JackHammers (47-43) doubled up the Schaumburg Flyers (35-55) 4-2 Thursday night at Silver Cross Field. Joliet pulled with a half game of idle Gary for third place with a three game series beginning tomorrow night between the two clubs.

Anderson (6-4), the reigning Northern League Pitcher of the Week, allowed two early runs and finished with seven strong innings. He struck out five of the final six batters he faced and didn't walk a batter opposite his 11 strikeouts.

Schaumburg plated a run in the first with the bases loaded on a Joey Gomes sacrifice fly to right field. The Flyers made it 2-0 after Ruddy Yan doubled and scored on a base hit by Kit Pellow in the third.

The JackHammers owned the middle frames, scoring the game's final four runs. Jon Nelson started the scoring in the fourth with his 24th home run of the season, a solo shot off Alain Quijano (5-8). Freddie Thon then reached on a two base error by Brandon Newton in left field and scored on a Richard Mercado single to tie the game at two.

Kevin Rios plated the game winning run in the fifth on a deep sacrifice fly to center, scoring Roberto Mena who led off with a double. Mena added the fourth run next inning, singling home Chris Colton for the 4-2 final.

Griffin Bailey pitched a scoreless ninth, picking up his 15th save of the season. The closer allowed a one out double to Ron Bourquin, but retired the final two hitters to preserve the victory.

Quijano threw six innings in the setback, surrendering four runs (three earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Mena collected two hits and a run batted in for Joliet with Rios, Nelson and Mercado knocking in the other three runs.

The JackHammers will begin a crucial three game series tomorrow in Gary. Todd Privett (8-4) will go up against Nolan Nicholson (5-4). Due to high school football coverage on 1340 WJOL, tomorrow's game will not be broadcast. First pitch at U.S. Steel Yard is set for 7:00 p.m.

Loose Gravel - The JackHammers end the season 8-8 against the Flyers, including a 4-3 record at Silver Cross Field - Joliet wrapped up the eight game home stand at 6-2, taking three of four in each series (Kansas City and Schaumburg) - Kevin Rios tied his longest hitting streak of the season at 11 games with a triple in the first inning - The JackHammers combined to strike out 14 hitters, a season high
